Roasted Turkey Breast Recipe

Roasted Turkey Breast makes a great recipe for Thanksgiving dinner for two to four people. It is also really easy to make for any time when you’re craving home-cooked turkey. This Roasted Turkey Breast recipe is fantastic to enjoy warm or chill it to use for amazing sandwich deli meat.

This turkey breast comes out flavorful and moist thanks to the simple homemade brine that is made with water, salt, honey, and spices. Marinating the breast for 8 to 12 hours prior to roasting makes the lean turkey meat extremely moist and flavorful inside. So, don’t skip it! After the marinating time is done coat the breast with seasonings and whole-grain Dijon mustard and roast it in the oven.

How to Roast Turkey Breast Boneless and Keep it Moist

Roast turkey breasts in the oven on high heat for 25 – 30 minutes. Then cover the baking dish with foil, turn off the oven and let the turkey rest in the hot oven for at least 90 minutes and up to it is completely cooled. The longer it sits in the oven the juicier it will be. Then take the breast out of the oven and serve warm or chill it in the fridge for deli turkey breast (see the notes below how to serve it). This roasting method helps the breast keep its moisture and prevents it from overcooking and drying out.

How to Serve Roasted Turkey Breast

This Roasted Turkey Breast can be served warm for delicious dinner, but it also creates the perfect homemade deli meat made with natural ingredients.

For Turkey Breast Dinner

Slice the warm turkey breast against the grain into thick slices and serve with your favorite sides and gravy. Here are my favorite ideas that go well with Roasted Turkey Breast:

Healthy Mashed Potatoes

Simply Roasted Vegetables

For Turkey Breast Deli Meat

Thinly slice the breast after it’s completely cooled in the oven and then chilled in the refrigerator. But no one forbid you to try it after you take it out from the oven! I often slice one part of the breast when it’s still warm to serve for dinner and the other part I leave unsliced to chill it for deli meat. Here are some delicious ways to enjoy deli turkey with:

      FAQs

How do you cook the turkey so that the breast doesn't dry out? ›

Layer roasting rack on top and place turkey breast with the skin up on a roasting tray. Roast. Roast in a 450F preheated oven for 25 minutes, until the skin is golden brown, then lower the oven temperature to 350 F and loosely cover the turkey with aluminum foil.

How to stop turkey breast drying out? ›

If you let the turkey rest a bit, the juices reabsorb into the meat rather than running out of the bird and landing on the cutting board. Carve it to order. The longer you let it sit after you slice it, the drier it will be. If you need to slice it, cover it with foil or plastic wrap to keep it from drying out.

Should turkey breast be covered or uncovered when roasting? ›

To achieve a perfectly golden, juicy turkey, let the bird spend time both covered and uncovered in the oven. We recommend covering your bird for most of the cooking time to prevent it from drying out; then, during the last 30 minutes or so of cooking, remove the cover so the skin crisps in the hot oven.

Does cooking a turkey breast down make it more moist? ›

The benefits of roasting a turkey breast-side down are twofold: The dark meat cooks faster when it's closer to the heat source, and the juices trickle down for extra-moist breast meat. Talk about a turn for the better! This works on all types of birds—organic, conventional, heirloom, you name it.

Do you rinse a turkey breast before baking? ›

It doesn't matter if you're roasting, frying, or smoking your turkey, there's no need to give it a rinse unless you've brined it (more on that below). Cooking the turkey kills any bacteria, but washing a turkey before you cook it opens the door to dangerous cross contamination.

What makes a turkey breast dry? ›

The problem: Cooking the turkey whole

Because dark meat has more connective tissues, it takes longer to break down, so if you cook the turkey whole, by time the legs and thighs are done, the breasts are overcooked and dry. The solution: Carve your turkey before you cook it.

What is the best temperature to cook a turkey to keep it moist? ›

      Oven-Roasted Turkey

We recommend starting the turkey in a 425 degree oven for 30-45 minutes before tenting the pan with foil and lowering the temperature to 350 degrees until a meat thermometer reads 165 degrees when inserted into the thickest part of the bird.

Is it better to cook a turkey at 325 or 350? ›

We recommend roasting turkey at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 13 minutes per pound for an unstuffed turkey. We've done the math for you — check out the chart below to determine both turkey cook times and estimated servings (with leftovers!).

What is the best temperature for turkey breast? ›

In general, you'll want to cook a bone-in turkey breast for about 20 minutes per pound at 350 degrees F (177 degrees C), or until it reaches a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees F (74 degrees C).

Do I roast a turkey breast side up or down? ›

The United States Department of Agriculture advises to cook a whole turkey breast side up during the entire cooking time. Turning over a large, hot bird can be dangerous and it's very easy to tear the skin, making the finished product less attractive.

Should you take turkey out of the fridge before cooking? ›

Your turkey will cook more evenly and faster if you start it out at room temperature so remove the turkey from the refrigerator 1 hour before roasting. If you plan to stuff your turkey, wait until you're ready to put it in the oven before putting the stuffing in the turkey.

Do you put water in the bottom of the roasting pan for turkey? ›

"Often, consumers will inquire about adding water to the bottom of their roasting pans. We do not recommend adding water to the bottom of the pan. Cooking a turkey with steam is a moist heat-cook method and is acceptable, sure, but is not the preferred method for cooking your turkey."

How do you not overcook turkey breast? ›

Cover the turkey breast with foil, while cooking.

This also prevents the turkey breast from overcooking or drying out. This way you don't have to keep basting the turkey breast while it's cooking either.

Why did my turkey breast come out dry? ›

If your turkey is dry, it means that the outer portion has overcooked. The size of the bird is what makes this a challenge. It can be difficult to achieve food safe temperatures at the center of the meat before the exterior dries out.

What temperature does turkey breast dry out? ›

(Our turkey took about an hour.) If that temperature seems low, read our post about poultry temperatures! If you wait to pull the turkey at 165°F (74°C), the breasts will be overcooked and dry.

How do you keep turkey moist out of the oven? ›

To do so, remove the turkey from the oven when it's done cooking and let it cool down for about 20 minutes. If you cover it right away, the trapped heat will continue to cook your bird and will result in overcooked (aka dry) meat. After 20 minutes, cover the turkey with foil and then place a kitchen towel on top.

Do you add water when baking a turkey breast? ›

"Often, consumers will inquire about adding water to the bottom of their roasting pans. We do not recommend adding water to the bottom of the pan. Cooking a turkey with steam is a moist heat-cook method and is acceptable, sure, but is not the preferred method for cooking your turkey."
