To start the gym challenge, run right of the Pokémon Center and a NPC will ask if you want to start the challenge. The challenge is just running straight through the streets of Spikemuth, taking down any Team Yell members who try to get in your way. A Mr. Mime will block your way if you haven’t beaten every trainer in the area, but none of them are hiding and are fairly easy to beat. Once you get to the end, you’ll find Piers.
Piers’ Pokémon
Pierce uses four dark-type Pokémon, but unlike all the other gym leaders, he doesn’t Gigantamax any of them. Not only can none of his party Gigantamax, but players are also unable to Dynamax in his gym.
Dark-types are weak against bug-, fairy-, and fighting-types, though some of the dual typing in Piers’ party will counter those. Bug-type will be four times as effective on Malamar, whereas Fairy-type moves won’t do as much damage to Scrafty. Bring a good variety of Pokémon if you want to clear the gym with ease.
Here are some good Pokémon to catch and evolve for this gym, as well as the easiest places to find them:
Caterpie, bug-type Found on Route 1
Stufful, normal/fighting Found on Route 5 and East Lake Axewell in the Wild Area
Tyrogue, fighting Found on Route 3 and Rolling Fields in the Wild Area
Milcrey, fairy Found on Route 4
Spikemuth gym rewards
After winning, you’ll get TM85, Snarl, as well as a dark-type uniform to wear outside of gym challenges. You’ll also be able to catch Pokémon up to level 55.
Each Pokemon of the four Pokemon is a Dark type with an extra type. For Scafty, push the Fairy moves. For Malamar, Bug attacks are very effective. Skuntank is really only weak to Ground moves and the Obstagoon is especially weak to fighting moves.
Mime. To get past them, just double back a few steps, and some Team Yell Grunts will turn up and give you a battle. Defeat them and they'll drop the wall, and you can press on!
Piers is the gym leader and he's a big fan of Dark-type Pokemon, which are weak to Fighting, Bug, and Fairy-types. Stock up on the right counters then keep walking east, where you'll have some trainers to face.
Dark-type Pokémon are weak to Fairy, Bug, and Fighting-type attacks, but all of Piers's Pokemon have secondary types that trainers can take advantage of. Scrafty is 4x weak to Fairy moves, Malamar is 4x weak to Bug, and Obstagoon will take 4x damage from Fighting-type attacks.
Dynamaxing is a tradition in the Galar region, which is why Piers not enjoying this new mechanic is very weird and out of place. Every gym will allow the player the ability to Dynamax their Pokémon, and the gym leaders will also use this feature to battle the player.
It's recommended that you level Kubfu up to at least 65 before trying to best these trials, as you may only take Kubfu inside the tower with you. Once you select a tower, you will battle your way through five floors per tower. Each features a Pokemon trainer with one Pokemon you will need to best.

The Cortondo gym is by far one of the easiest for players to complete due to the combination of Bug-type Pokemon and also being the lowest level of the gyms. Trainers can face this gym with ease from the minimum level of fifteen.
In Pokémon games, the final gym leader is expected to be the strongest, but in Pokémon Sword and Shield, this may not actually be the case. Galar's gym leaders are all skilled Pokémon trainers, but their arrangement may not be the most accurate representation of their true skill.
Piers, the Spikemuth Gym Leader, uses Dark-type Pokemon, which are weak to Fighting and Fairy types, so you can put yourself at an advantage by having one ready in your party.
The first gym leader you will face, Brock, isn't all that tough to beat -- unless you mismatch types. Water Pokémon like Squirtle won't have any problems blazing through this battle. If you don't have Squirtle, use a Fighting Pokémon or a Level 12 (or higher) Normal type like Nidoran for an easy battle.
Raihan's dragon-types are weak against dragon-, fairy-, and ice-types, with a couple of exceptions. For Gigalith and Sandaconda, you can use water- and grass-types to knock them down.
