I know the others are trying to save face, but there's no use in denying the obvious.
Painter Vanhanen, commonly known as Noel, is the Normal-type Gym Leader of the Reborn League, the twin brother of Anna, and the son of Radomus and Zina. He hands out the Standard Badge, the 7th Gym Badge the player receives.
Noel is usually stoic and is a bit more of a realist compared to his cheerful twin sister Anna. He is incredibly smart for his age, able to calculate numbers and plan accordingly in seconds. Just like Anna with her Jirachi doll, Noel carries around a Cleffa doll named Nomos (although he says they're not real unlike what Anna says).

Story Events[]
Dr. Connal's Orphanage[]
Noel is an orphan that is first met at the Dr. Connal's Orphanage alongside his twin sister, Anna, as well as Charlotte. Anna introduces him and his Cleffa, Nomos, to the player. Noel then says they're just dolls, but says Nomos said hi to the player. Anna also says he's a gym leader just like Charlotte. He says Laura does not have to stay in the orphanage anymore since she turned eighteen. Charlotte then says you can't leave the orphanage unless you're eighteen or if Dr. Sigmund Connal decides to let you go. Anna shoos the player out when Sigmund comes in, saying to not let Shelly come here.
The player meets Noel again when Cain and Shelly breaks into the orphanage to get Heather back. Charlotte agrees to help them if it means they can get out, and creates a diversion. Noel asks Cain to block the doorway of the circuit so he wouldn't be outnumbered, which Cain comments that he's a smart kid. Noel then gets captured by some orderlies and locked up. The player then frees him and Charlotte gives him his pokemon back after she is rescued.
Once Shelly and the player reach the ECT chamber, Noel and his Clefable can be seen helping Cain and Charlotte to fight Sigmund and two of his orderlies - with the Doctor admitting that he is now outnumbered, however, Charlotte burns him with her cigarette, forcing him to free Heather from the clutches of his Electivire.
Underground Railnet[]
Upon escaping the Dr. Connal's Orphanage, Noel flees to the Underground Railnet with the rest of the group, although they are later captured - with the exception of Cain - by Sirius, who emerges from the basem*nt of the Yureyu HQ after the player persuades Shade to open the door leading there.
Yureyu HQ[]
When Cain and the player eventually enter the Yureyu HQ, Noel is being held in cage by two Team Meteor grunts. Once Cain and the player defeat the grunts, Noel says Anna and Heather are being held upstairs by Sigmund and another guy. He also says that they took an Amethyst Pendant from Anna, a gift along with Nostra and Nomos from their real father when they were put in the orphanage. Charlotte then asks Cain and the player to go deal with them so she can unlock the cage.
Underground Railnet[]
After Anna and Heather are rescued from the building, Noel continues through the Underground Railnet with the rest of the group. They then find that the entrance to the Chrysolia Region is blocked by rubble. Shelly suggest to use a train, and the group finds one only to notice that there are no rails that lead to the rubble. Noel then says that there were twelve switches, and if they ignore dead ends and broken rails, the number of possible combinations are reduced from 46,656 to 8. Cain asks how he knows that, which Noel replies that it was obvious (which Cain replies back no, it was not).
Anna asks the player to find the combination and tell Noel to check it over. After getting the right combination, they took control of the train and broke through the rubble, emerging in the Chrysolia Region.
Belrose Manse[]
Upon exiting the train, Charlotte leads the group to Belrose Manse - the family home of her and her sisters - via Tanzan Mountain. Noel then notices that Anna doesn't feel well (although Anna claims its Nostra that doesn't feel well) and later asks Laura if Anna can lie down somewhere.
Charlotte tasks the player with going to Spinel Town to collect some medicine for the ailing Anna. Following Anna's recovery, Anna asks Noel to have a gym battle with the player. He replies that its not a good time but Anna says otherwise. The player then challenges Noel to a gym battle, which is interrupted by the arrival of her oldest sister, Saphira. Saphira instructs Anna, Charlotte, Shelly and Noel to get inside, tasking Laura and the player with defending the house before going to fight Team Meteor on her Dragonite.
At this point, the game branches into 4 paths, with one of the paths resulting in Noel and Anna being captured by Team Meteor. If they are captured, the player will venture with Saphira and free them with Gargantuan Steelix. If Saphira, Laura or Shelly and Charlotte are captured, the twins stays at Tanzan Cove to await the player's return.
After the player returns from the Meteor Base, Anna suggest they finish Noel's gym battle with the player. Noel and the player have a gym battle, with the player victorious. Laura comes back and Anna asks everyone to come inside. Noel then asks the player to go in a different room to talk. He says that there is a slim chance that Saphira survived and won't make it back. He asks the player to find her in Tanzan Mountain to conform her survival, since he's not going to wait for her to come back. The player later finds Saphira, and she says she'll take the group to Calcenon City while giving the player the Ruby Ring and Amethyst Pendant.
Calcenon City[]
He is next seen in Calcenon City, along with Anna, Charlotte, Shelly, Laura and Saphira. Cain explains that they need to Ametrine City, but it is blocked by an ice block. Anna suggest they need to go under it, and Noel says you need TMX Dive to do that, which is at Agate Circus. After getting activating TMX Fly, Cain and Hardy says the twins went missing and that they are looking for them (the player as of now can't look for them yet).
Glass Workstation[]
After getting the Torrent Badge, the player goes back to Calcenon City to search for the twins. They then explore Route 4 with Hardy after obtaining TMX Rock Climb. They then discover the Glass Workstation, and it turns out that the twins were sleeping in chambers the whole time. The player tries to get him out, but Noel says they need to stay because Anna and Nostra told him to, and that Anna is who the player wants to see instead. He then continues to sleep in the chamber.
Radomus, Luna, Serra and Gossip Gardevoir then come into the Glass factory and meet Anna and Noel. It is revealed that Noel and Anna are the children of Radomus, and that Noel's real name is 'Painter Vanhanen'. The twins went to the Glass Workstation so they would switch places with Lumi and Eve. They all then go back to Calcenon City with the player, although Noel doesn't seem too thrilled with reuniting with his father, even distancing himself from him.
Calcenon City[]
Back at Calcenon City, Noel sits besides Anna, watching his father amuse his sisters with his various costumes. He tells the player that finding their father was pointless, as he didn’t expect it would entail his father’s antics.
After Team Meteor has been driven out from Agate City, Anna leaves Radomus and Noel. Radomus then begins to dote on Noel. Noticing this, Noel asks him why he’s doing that, and points out that Radomus always focuses on Anna. Radomus tries to deny it, but Noel tells him he’s used to only being spoken to when his sister isn’t with him. Noel claims there’s nothing special about him, save for him being forgettable.
Shortly after, Noel asks the player if they think one decides or feels who’s important to them. If the player answers “Feel”, Noel says his father doesn’t feel that way about him. He thinks this isn’t fair. If the player answers “Decide”, Noel instead says his father hasn’t made that decision yet. Therefore, Noel chooses not to need Radomus.
Thanks to Bennett’s plan, the barrier to Labradorra City is eventually disabled. However, while the other Gym Leaders (as well as Lumi, Eve, Cal, and Victoria) go forward, Noel stays behind. He explains to the player that he doesn’t think he’s crucial to anyone’s plans, or that he has any stakes in the fight against Team Meteor. He will provide assistance but, to him, it’s not the same.
Labradorra City - Labradorra Arena[]
During the battle of Labradorra, Noel sights the player facing down Zero and PULSE Clawitzer. He decides to go help them, after seeing one of the PULSE’s shots flying over the player’s head. His arrival fares badly for him, however, as Zero immediately makes him the PULSE’s next target. Before Noel even realizes what’s happening, Radomus climbs up to the roof, runs up to him, and attempts to shield him from the blast. This doesn’t end his father, however, as Shade sacrifices Nomos to save Noel. Radomus immediately asks him if he’s alright, and Noel tells him he is. Nomos’s sacrifices has confused him as to the true nature of his doll. Radomus realizes Nomos was not what he seemed at all, but Noel doesn’t understand still. As two New World Cultists rise up to challenge Noel and Radomus, the latter asks him if he’d do him the honors of fighting with him, side by side. Wether it be as father and son, or as equals, Noel agrees, and together they defeat the Cultists.
With the battle over, Radomus against asks Noel if he’s okay. He assures him he’s fine, but still finding it very difficult to understand what just happened, as well as understand Radomus. His father replies that Nomos was very likely far more real than either of them could comprehend or accept. It is clear that he was real enough to save them both. With this in mind, Radomus asks Noel if love couldn’t be the same way. Neither of them know the answer, but Radomus invites Noel to find the answer with each other.
Lumi soon arrives, looking for Zero. The two of them leave the building, and Radomus beckons his son to do the same. Yet, Noel stays for a brief moment. He begins to understand that Anna’s visions may have been true, and that just because he can’t see something doesn’t mean it’s not there. He wonders what else he’s missing, and, determined to find out, he follows Radomus out.
After the battle is over, Noel gets trapped in Labradorra Arena, and along with several other Gym Leaders, forced to participate in Terra’s tournament. For the first round, he gets set to fight with Serra against Hardy and Radomus. Before the battles begin, he tells the player having to fight his father doesn’t feel right under the present circ*mstances, but doesn’t feel bad, either. It gives him a feeling without a word for it, which he relates to smells. He explain that many smells do not have words, and wonders what his current feelings would smell like. Additionally, he voices his desire to invent words for all things that never had them.
During the first round, Terra presents Noel as “Anna v0.3”, to which Noel replies with silence. Despite being on opposite sides, Radomus asks Noel to fight without holding back. At Noel’s questioning, he explains that he’s allowed to fight for himself. But, Noel doesn’t think he and Serra would perform well after winning, so he thinks they should lose to Radomus and Hardy. Noel looses along with Serra, so both of them are “deleted” by Terra. He is eventually freed after the player and Florinia defeat Terra.
New World (Vanhanen Castle)[]
During the Cresselia Quest, Noel will be kept asleep by a Shiinotic. He can be found inside a room of Vanhannen Castle within the New World. When the player wakes him up, he’ll explain that Serra, Radomus and himself had been exploring parts of Vanhanen Castle that were sown up with the New World, before being attacked by Shiinotic. He expresses discontent with his father’s disappearance, and seeks out an exit from the New World. Before leaving, he asks the player to not waste time with him.
Nightclub[]
When spoken to at the Nightclub, Noel firstly greets and thanks the player for waking him and Serra. Julia told him that the player had risen to a different level of existence, but Noel guesses that it’s a lie. Regardless, he tells the player that it’s good to see them.
Not Truly For Children[]
While the player and Euphie explore Not Truly For Children, they witness scenes from the latter’s past, within Dr. Connal’s Orphanage. Noel is shown to greet Euphie along with Anna and Charlotte. Anna points out that Euphie looks mopey, and Noel tells her she can’t call people that. He also denies that Nomos is alive. When Charlotte notes that Euphie isn’t one for chit-chat, he replies that there’s nothing wrong with that. Lastly, when Anna mocks him and Charlotte for not noticing that Euphie is a boy, Noel tells her she’s seeing things again.
Laura later joins the group, and together they hear shouting coming from Dr. Connal’s office. Noel agrees with Anna’s suggestion to fight Euphie in order to let him blow off some steam, in his gym beneath the orphanage. Anna decides Noel will fight with her against Euphie first; this isn’t an idea he’s immediately fond of, but he gives in. By the end of the battle, his sister realizes the player is fighting alongside Euphie. Noel has no idea what she’s seeing, leaving him confused by her reaction.
After Charlotte and Laura are defeated as well, Lin makes her presence known. She complains about never being invited to battle by the group, to which Noel answers that they’re all sparring as members of the League. He points out she doesn’t even have Pokémon to fight with. Lin then reveals she stole some of the Orderlies’ Pokémon, and soon after fights Euphie and the player.
Lin continues to ridicule Charlotte, who, in response, threatens to give her a cigarette burn. Noel advices Charlotte against this, as it would make the situation worse for her, as Lin already has blackmail on her side. Noel’s reaction and future actions after this are unknown, as the memory ends shortly after.
Rhodochrine Jungle[]
Eventually, Noel receives an invitation from Lumi to have a picnic at Rhodochrine Jungle with Eve, Heather, Shelly, the player, Laura, and her. Noel accepts, and comes to Rhodochrine Jungle. The player later comes as well, but Noel does not feel like he belongs in the picnic. He says that he doesn’t know what he’s doing there, or what the point of eating outside is, as it attracts bugs.
While the player’s picking up food from The Spyce, a strange aura begins to affect the jungle. Soon after, a gate to the New World appears in front of the picnic. Noel and Eve both deduce the aura and the gate must be connected in some way, so they step into the door. Now inside Rhodochrine Tree, the two are confounded by its lack of color, and the presence of several Pokémon. These Pokémon are not real, and Noel notices that each floor has two sides of Pokémon that fight each other. Not long after, erratic root growths end up forcing Eve to retreat. She passes her tablet to Noel, who then assists the player in finding out which Pokémon must be defeated to create balance between light and dark.
Rhodochrine Tree[]
The two eventually get to the top, and find it impossible to continue, due to the barriers. Noel speculates that, had Eve gotten to the top instead, she could’ve done something about it. Suddenly, the player and Noel spot Heather and her Salamence giving chase to Yveltal. The Legendary Pokémon successfully returns to its roost, and the barriers begins closing in. Heather offers to take Noel and the player down to the base. Noel, however, refuses, and nonchalantly states that “it’s okay”. He argues that, if he stays behind, he can find out what is affecting the barriers. Having accepted the risks, Noel stays inside the tree until the player acquires a Complete Forme Zygarde.
Lin Route
Anna Route
With the top of the tree now free to access thanks to Zygarde, Xerneas faces the player. Yet, Lin notices Noel within the Anomaly, and “washes” Xerneas by pulling out the “junk” it has: Noel. He is coated in Umbral aura, which leads her to believe he’ll turn emotionally unstable, as is usual. Noel says there’s no need, but he fights nonetheless upon her insistence.
After the battle, Noel explains that even with the Umbral aura, he was in control. He already knew how other people were affected by it, so he recognizes that battling the player was unnecessary. Noel affirms that he’s tired of others assuming they know what he needs better than he does. As such, he reveals that in the players absence, he met with, connected with, and arrived at a mutual understanding with Xerneas. This understanding was still in progress when he was torn from it. Xerneas decides to go with the player, so he asks them to take good care of his friend. Seeing there’s more to do, he waits for the player to speak to him again.
Upon the player’s interaction, he expresses some disappointment at the tree’s lack of color, which Yveltal’s defeat did not solve.
Soon enough, his father arrives, looking for him. Noel quickly sees through his half-hearted efforts at connecting with him. His father clarifies to him that it’s only halved, because the other half (Anna) went away. But Noel sees that his father still focuses far more on her than he does in him. If anything, he thinks that he focused on her far more from the moment they were both born. Radomus confides in him that he was fearful of loosing her as he had lost her mother, Zina. He laments at his failure to protect Anna, and making Noel feel like second-fiddle. Noel goes on to criticize the name he was given, “Painter”, thinking it a dull, ordinary name. Seeing it in a completely different manner, Radomus explains that he envisioned him to be an artist who could draw Fantasia (Anna’s) dreams to life. This idea does not go well with Noel, and Radomus acknowledges the immaturity he had in not thinking of Noel’s own dreams, that he could paint into reality. He sees that, as many dreams as there are in the world, what is truly needed is the ability to bring them to life. Between this and the black and white tree he draws a comparison, seeing it as a possible canvas upon which to paint something new. This reminds Noel of how obvious it is that new color needs to be placed in a world such as this. Radomus is at a loss for how to bring color to it. Noel steps forward and channels a new power, speaking of the sensical workings of Xerneas’s creation ability. He speaks of the ways life and land are created, likening it to art. The sky is blue, and the trees are green, yet, Noel wonders what color he is. He wonders what does it matter as well, and upon these questions, chooses to draw something entirely different. By unleashing his own ability, he gives new colors to the tree. Having finished his creation, he notices his father’s cat ears, and questions his usage of them. Radomus in turn questions the importance of his cat ears, and Noel soon jumps into a more pressing matter.
While Noel was in the Anomaly, he witnessed how Lin reaches into the New World. He gained full understanding of it, which he now proves by directly summing a dead person, Eclipse, through the New World. After her defeat, Eclipse feels great shame in having left her father alone. Noel reassures her by saying that her father appreciates how hard she’s tried in her own way to express her care for him. Radomus wishes to guide her down from the tree. He asks Noel if it’s alright to leave him, and Noel accepts this. He’s thankful that his father spoke to him.
In preparation for Lin’s defeat, Noel explains to the player how he can place them at her. He asks the player to remove Arceus’s meteor through Giratina, as there is "too much of her" on it. The second request he makes is for Fern to be brought to him alive. Much of Anna’s knowledge on the timeline is now his as well. Noel now understands that Fern fought and lost against Lin at New World Asylum a “clock” ago. Because of this, if he has Fern, he also knows where Lin is.
Once Fern is with him, and the meteor has been removed, Noel swiftly creates a door to New World Asylum. However, he asks that only the player step forward. That way, Lin’s expectations will be shattered, as she is expecting every single Leader and ally the player has to come bursting through. Noel expects her to crumble under her own expectations.
When spoken to again, Noel looks back on Lin and Anna’s time at the orphanage. He never expected their usual chess plays to go so far. He wants Lin especially to knock the pieces over, and put the board away.
With the top of the tree now free to access thanks to Zygarde, Xerneas faces the player. Yet, Anna notices her brother within the Anomaly, and immediately pulls Noel out of Xerneas. He is coated in Umbral aura, which worries her. Noel assures her that it wasn’t necessary to have him pulled out of Xerneas, and that the Umbral aura has no effect on him whatsoever. Anna excitedly orders him to attack “Lin”, which Noel initially is hesitant to do, as the player is not Lin. He tells her that Lin is gone, and that even though some things can be felt without being seen, he finds her claims hard to believe. Upon Anna’s continued insistence, Noel fights the player, and loses.
After the battle, Noel explains that even with the Umbral aura, he was in control. He already knew how other people were affected by it, so he recognizes that battling the player was unnecessary. Noel informs him of who she is, and that she’s Dreamsick, with their mom being the same way. Changing the world to an extreme degree led to them falling out of it, and being forgotten by all, save by those closest to them. Noel knows that Anna truly thinks she’s still fighting Lin, as she has been for a very long time. He also knows that Arceus itself worsened this delusion, and as such, she has to be saved by someone else from herself. However, he asks that only the player step forward. That way, Anna will want to try less. By trying less, she will exert herself less, and as such, decrease the risk of her actually dying.
When spoken to again, he tells the player that simply pulling her out won’t cure the Dreamsickness. She still needs to be separated from Arceus, however, as its influence, as well as Lin’s influence, have worsened her much. He lastly asks the player to be gentle with his sister.
Postgame Credits[]
During the postgame credits, Noel is shown to have won a Gym Leader battle against a challenger. The trainer gets frustrated at their loss, and asks Noel why he has a Clefable, a Fairy type, in his team. Noel answers that he is allowed to have a wildcard, and that it’s not even the worst one he could have pulled. He advises the trainer to first heal their Pokémon.
After the trainer leaves, Noel thanks the player for refereeing the match, and speaks of his appreciation for his new Gym battle site, which is within Rhodochrine Tree. This location is far more preferable and appropiate to him than the blank room beneath the orphanage. It feels like him, though he understands that to others, it might not be that way. He surmises that it may be like the AI test, where the AI passes if other people can’t tell that it’s not a real person. Thus, other people might see the differing colors, yet still call it the same thing. Noel knows color as the absence of itself, yet it’s enough to him if it makes him feel the same way. If it does, then it is real, including bonds with others. Many other things, like bonds, are invisible yet real. Noel hopes to one day find those things, and paint with them. He then recalls he told Lumi they’d get bubble tea after he was done with his fight, and promptly rides off on Xerneas to meeting her, bidding farewell to the player.

Ten years later, Noel has become Reborn’s most eminent artist. His pieces are exhibited in some of the most prestigious galleries in the world, and even made the largest amount of money a living artist ever has in selling a piece last year. This last achievement, however, was due to Radomus outbidding someone else by tenfold, in an art show Noel had never told him was happening. His father is extremely supportive of his endeavors, wishing to make up for all his years of absence in his son’s life. He is so intense, that Noel finds him slightly overwhelming and embarrassing. According to Radomus, however, his antics do make him smile from time to time. Regardless, Noel feels content that his father tries so earnestly to understand and support him.
While Elias and Radomus loudly quarrel, Noel and the player speak with each other elsewhere. Though Noel wasn’t too worried about the player, since he trusted Shelly’s certainty, he admits he’s glad to finally see them again. After some talking, they walked to the café in Agate City to drink tea. They also discussed his art, time travel, and several other things.
When spoken to, he will also say that he was approached by Samson and asked to make an extravagant ring. Although this is somewhat out of his style, it was because of Radomus’s high tales that Samson eventually approached him. Noel would like for people to not get the wrong idea about his work.

While Radomus gushes about gladly spending his fortune on his son’s art, Noel reminds him that his fortune was stolen from Taka’s father, Solaris.
Radomus proceeds to brag about being the Champion of Monopoly, but Noel shuts him down, as the title doesn’t formally exist. His father retorts that this is a title in his own heart, and that one day he will gather enough people to be recognized in a true championship. Noel rounds the conversation off by thanking the player and Taka, and he tells them he owes them a lot. Though, in Taka’s case that seems to apply more to Radomus’s debt.

A special report from... the Investigation Squad! Yo, Reborn City! What's up?! We're here with the Reborn Rundown giving you a look at the leaders of the Reborn League! I'm your host, DJ Arclight, now on air! Let's talk about Noel. One of Reborn's youngest leaders, this prodigal boy has an arena set up right below the Lapis Ward's orphanage. Noel's got a penchant of frustrating his unsuspected challengers, who suppose either his youth or his Normal type Pokemon will make for an easy match. Not to be outdone so easily, Noel packs a medley of Pokemon that covers his weaknesses. Including, to the surprise of many, his Clefable! Though Clefable is no longer a Normal type Pokemon, Noel is one of the few Leaders to use a wildcard in his battles. Don't let yourself get stuck on this brick wall of a Pokemon, and do whatever it takes to take it out before it gets cozy in its defensive capability! By the way, a few of our listeners have asked in the past about just how someone of Noel's age earned a position in the Reborn League. Like any leader, he was referred to the position and passed his qualifying tests-- with flying colors, no less! But just who would refer him to such a position? We'll give you just a small hint! All right, listen closely: "..." That's all for now, but remember, Trainers, Keep fighting with everything you've got! Hold your spirits high, and even you can defeat the Reborn League! |

Trivia[]
- Noel's name is a word play on 'Normal'.
- According to Amethyst, Noel has Asperger's syndrome. [2]
- Because of his Clefable, Noel is the only Gym Leader in Pokemon Reborn who uses a Pokemon that is not of their specialist type in their gym battle against the player.
- Although this is because prior to gen VI, Clefable was a Normal type before it was retyped into Fairy.
- This excludes Ciel's Mega Altaria, who loses its Flying type in favor of the Fairy type after it mega evolves. It also excludes Saphira's Mega Charizard which isn't a dragon type prior to mega evolution but becomes a dragon type when it mega evolves.
