York is a cathedral city in North Yorkshire, England, with Roman origins, sited at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss. It is the county town of Yorkshire.

In the late Viking period it is thought that the name Jorvik was shortened to something resembling its present form, York and in the medieval age the name York was generally used, although an alternative form 'Yerk' also existed at this time.

Although compact, the city of Yorkshire holds a rich history. With buildings and ruins dating back to the Viking, Roman, Georgian and Victorian eras, the vast, yet diverse cultural heritage of York is what attracts visitors from all over the world.

Shambles is one of York's most famous landmarks and one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. With its cobbled streets and overhanging buildings, it is believed to have been the inspiration behind Diagon Alley from the movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series.

Its winding streets, beautiful shops and deep history give York a quintessential British appeal that attracts a vast amount of visitors each year. The city offers something for everyone to enjoy all year round making it perfect for a family break or romantic getaway.

The city is home to the KitKat chocolate bar, which has been produced by Nestle in York since the 1930s. Another popular sweet treat from York is the famous Yorkshire Curd Tart, which is a sweet pastry filled with curd cheese, sugar, and spices.

Guy Fawkes was born and raised in York. He was born in a house in Stonegate in 1570 and was educated at St Peters school in York. St Peters scholl still exists today. Later in his life Guy Fawkes became an activist against the persecution of Catholics.

In 866 different groups of Vikings formed a great army. They fought their way through England and finally came to York. They took over the Anglo-Saxon town and decided to stay there. The Vikings changed the name of the town from the Anglo-Saxon Eoforwic to 'Jorvik'.

Part of the first Harry Potter film was filmed in York using two locations; unbeknownst to many people, York's railway station was used in the first film instead of Kings Cross.
