I've used bought mincemeat that is 2-3 months out of date in Mary Berry's mincemeat cake. It was fine but if jars are years old, I wouldn't waste time, effort, other ingredients and fuel cooking something that may or may not be “o*k”. Mincemeat usually keeps well, however several years may be a step too far.
Can I use mincemeat from last year? ›
It's probably ok, but might not taste quite right. I have a friend who buys up reduced price mincemeat, marzipan, ready made icing etc after Christmas, and uses these provisions to make the next year's mince pies and lots of small Christmas cakes to give as gifts.

Unless they smell like they're mouldy, or are mouldy, they're fine. Food banks will take them, or give to a homeless charity. Best before date is only a guide. Heat them in oven and get stuck in.

By the 18th century it was more likely to be tongue or even tripe, and in the 19th century it was minced beef. It was not until the late Victorian period and early 20th Century that mince pies dropped the meat and had all fruit fillings (albeit with suet).
