Princess Diana Had Two Hairsprays Made - One Was For Tiaras (2024)

Princess Diana sent shockwaves around the world when she allowed stylist Sam McKnight to cut her 80s hair in the early 90s.

The two had met at a Vogue photoshoot in 1990 that Patrick Demarchelier had been commissioned to do and it naturally included a cover image.

McKnight has told the story before about how he told her he would cut all of her hair off when she asked what he would do with her hair.

Princess Diana, Hair

He has also spoken about the fact that Princess Diana used to get perms at the time, and it was he who finally weaned her off the permanent hair solution.

But, something new has emerged about Princess Diana and her quest for perfect hair and it involves helicopters and tiaras.

Helicopter Hairspray

An American chemist, Sherrie Ladove Funsch, is from a family that founded a beauty business in the 70s and she was commissioned by Diana to create hairspray that could resist extreme wind for her helicopter trips around the world.

It was one of two the chemist spent time on, and Sam worked alongside her to create the wind-resistant spritz. She has said in a new video 'When she would get off the helicopter, the blades would just spin and spin and her hair [would go wild]. So her beautiful coiffed, cute little cut would go crazy.'

Formulating

Her quest to make the perfect hairspray sounds like it cost a lot of time and money, Ladove made quite a few international trips to exotic locations exploring forests and different terrains for resins to experiment on.

Eventually, it seems, Ladove created the right formula that would hold Princess Diana's hair in place without it looking stiff or hard. She says 'She didn’t want anything that would make her hair look glued down because she was so young and so beautiful.'

Tiaras

Ladove says she only met Princess Diana once during this whole process, but it's a memory she cherishes. However, having found the right resin and formulation for the princess to use when flying, she was commissioned to make another that wouldn't damage her many tiaras.

For this, she removed any ingredients that could have tarnished or left a residue on the precious metals and jewels. Ladove never marketed either hairspray, but we reckon she could have made a pretty penny if she had.
