Orientation -First Year Students: UCLA New Student & Transition Programs (2024)

Participating in the entirety of New Student Orientation is the beginning of a successful start here at UCLA. Each day is full of activities that will assist you in learning everything there is to know about the campus, from what courses to take to how to get involved, and much more.

With that in mind, it is our hope that you will take advantage of everything that is offered during your session. Failure to participate in any part of your session is your own responsibility, and can jeopardize proper academic advising and course enrollment.

On campus housing and meals are provided in the First Year New Student Session. Students will stay in the residence halls and will eat in residential dining facilities and campus restaurants.

Day 1:The day will introduce you to many different aspects of the university: the campus academic environment, faculty expectations, degree requirements, student safety, and the student community.

Day 2: The day focuses on your major and course planning. You will meet with your New Student Advisor individually to review your requirements and begin selecting courses for Fall Quarter. Between your appointments you will have the opportunity to attend workshops about your interests and goals. The day ends with enrollment in your Fall Quarter classes.

Costs

Orientation Fee: $500 (2 days/1 night)

Early Arrival: (if you need to arrive the evening before your session starts) $60

Staythrough: Available for non-California residents in sessions 110, 111, and 112 only. $70/night (includes meals) for the entire period from the end of your Orientation session until Move-In Weekend begins on September 18, when academic year contracts begin. Therefore Staythrough fees vary depending on the session attended – please contact our office for more details!

Fee to change or cancel session before the deadline: $10
Fee to change or cancel session after deadline/not show to scheduled session: $20

On-campus housing and meals are included in the First Year New Student Orientation session.

Billing Procedures

The New Student Orientation fee will be billed to your UCLA BruinBill. Your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) fee of $250 does not cover the session fee.

No payment is due when you make a reservation.All session fees will be billed in the month after you attend a session. July sessions are billed in August, due in September; August sessions are billed in September, due in October; September sessions will be billed in September, due in October.

Financial Assistance

Starting college has many costs and we want to make UCLA accessible for everyone. Students who receive a Pell Grant as a part of their financial aid package will have their orientation fees fully covered. You will still see a charge on your BruinBill account after attending orientation, but you will not need to pay for orientation.

If you are not a Pell Grant recipient and have concerns about the cost of the student and/or family orientation program, please contact our office at newstudents@college.ucla.edu or 310-206-6685 (open during business hours, Monday-Friday, 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-5:00pm). When you contact our office, we will provide you with options that can ensure you have access to attending orientation; one of these options includes requesting a payment plan to distribute the session fees to be billed in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.

If paying for New Student Orientation is the only reason preventing you from attending, please contact our office and we will work with you individually.

Payment Policies

• Failure to pay your session fees by the billing deadlines will result in a $20 per month Student Accounting late charge and will result in a hold on your records.
• If you do not arrive by the 10:00 am deadline for your session, your reservation will be cancelled and you will be charged a $20 late cancellation fee.
• If you attend a New Student Orientation session and do not attend UCLA, you still will be billed for all session fees for services provided.
• If you decide not to attend UCLA after signing up for a New Student Orientation session, you are still responsible for cancelling your session in order to avoid being billed or incurring any charges.You must contact New Student & Transition Programs to cancel. If you do not contact New Student & Transition Programs, you will be charged the $20 late cancellation/no show fee.

If you are not a California resident (you are an international student or live in another US state), you are welcome to attend any available session.

However, New Student Orientation sessions110(September 4-5),111(September 9-10), 112 (September 12-13) will have the option of “staythrough” for non-California residents. This is a per night charge (including meals) from your session until campus move-in begins. A Staythrough allows you to stay on campus in the session residence hall and then move into your academic year room as soon as it is available, typically within a couple days after your session. This will take the place of your assigned Move-In time.

Sessions 110, 111, and 112 will be mostly reserved for non-California residents. When you make your New Student Orientation reservation for session 110, 111, or 112, you will see the option to add “staythrough” for your session.

International students: Once you are within the 30-day window for entering the United States on your visa, you will have the opportunity to participate in the visa check-in process with the.

Reservations begin May 28, 2024 at 3:00 pm (Pacific time) via MyUCLA .

In the meantime, please fill out the Pre-Session Planner. This must be completed before you are able to register for a New Student Session. The Pre-Session Planner survey provides your New Student Advisor with the information needed to tailor your academic appointment to your needs.

You can fill out your Pre-Session Planner on MyUCLA one day after you submit your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR). Completing your survey beforeMay 28 will allow your session reservation process to go smoothly.

Special Considerations for Reservations

If you have a permanent or temporary disability, or a need which may require advance arrangements for assistance, please contact our office at least 2 weeks before your session. For students needing materials in Braille, please consider attending sessions in August or September and contact our office as soon as you have made a reservation.

Academic Advising

Academic advising is essential for appropriate course enrollment and academic advisors and counseling are an integral part of New Student Orientation. All incoming students are strongly encouraged to participate in a New Student Orientation session so that you have guidance in choosing the appropriate courses for your degree.

If you cannot participate in New Student Orientation, keep in mind that UCLA academic advisors are dedicated to the sessions and may be unable to meet with you until after the summer sessions have ended.

Course Enrollment

A component of New Student Orientation is enrolling in Fall Quarter classes, and many students and their families are concerned about the availability of courses at different session dates. Working with individual departments, seats are saved for incoming students in many of the “high demand” General Education, and/or major courses. These seats are dispersed evenly throughout all New Student Sessions. There is no guarantee you will get your first choice in every class you would like, but it is an attempt to make this an equitable process. Therefore, it does not matter if you participate in the first session or the last, because you will have the same chance of enrolling in one of these courses.

Depending on the courses that you plan on taking at UCLA, or the requirements that you need to fulfill for your major or college, you may need to take one or more of the following placement exams.

Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)

Because proficiency in English composition is important to successful performance in many courses, the UC Entry Level Writing requirement must be satisfied before entering or during your first year at UCLA. It is possible that you have satisfied the requirement through exams; please visit theUCLA Writing Programs – AWPE pageto learn more.

If you have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement, you will need to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE), which will be given online on the following dates:

• Monday, June 24^th, 2024(for students attending Sessions 101, 102, or 103): Exam will be given online from 10 am-1 pm on BruinLearn
• Monday, July 8^th, 2024 (for students attending Session 103): Exam will be given online from 10 am-1 pm on BruinLearn
• Monday, July 15^th, 2024 (for students attending Sessions 104, 105, or 106): Exam will be given online from 10 am-1 pm on BruinLearn
• Wednesday, July 31^st, 2024(for students attending Sessions 107,108, or 109): Exam will be given online from 10 am-1 pm on BruinLearn
• Thursday, August 15^th, 2024(for students attending Sessions 110, 111 or 112): Exam will be given online from 10 am-1 pm on BruinLearn

In order to enroll in the appropriate English Composition course at New Student Orientation, you must take the exam on the date recommended for the session you plan to attend, or earlier. If you don’t, you may have to wait until Winter or Spring to take the appropriate composition course.

The cost of the exam is $104, which will be charged to your Bruinbill after you have successfully completed and submitted all parts of the exam.

Chemistry Diagnostic Test

If you plan to enroll in Chemistry 17, Chemistry 14A, Chemistry 14AE, Chemistry 20A, or Chemistry 20AH during the Fall 2024 quarter you must take the online Chemistry Diagnostic Test.

The exam will be available online beginning May 1, 2024. Please complete the exam before July 1, 2024so that your placement recommendation will be available at your New Student Orientation session, allowing you to enroll in the appropriate course. There is no charge for taking this examination and the results are advisory, not mandatory.

Mathematics Diagnostic Test

Students planning to enroll in Math 1, 3A or 31A (calculus courses) for Fall Quarter must complete the Math Diagnostic Test between May 1, 2024and July 1, 2024. There is a fee of$20 fee (non-refundable) to take the exam.

Foreign Language

Some UCLA College or Schools have a Foreign Language Requirement, but it is possible that you have satisfied it before attending UCLA. At New Student Orientation, your New Student Advisor will guide you on any language placement exams to take if you would like to satisfy the foreign language requirement for your school/college or continue taking courses in a foreign language. To check your college or school’s Foreign Language requirements please visit theForeign Language Requirement website .

Music Theory Placement Exam

All students admitted as, or interested in being, a School of Music major must take the Music Theory Placement Exam. Details on how to take the exam will be emailed by Herb Alpert School of Music.

You should also make an appointment to speak with the Music Department counselor before Fall Quarter enrollment begins. To contact the departmental counselor in School of Music, call (310) 206-5002.

Immunization Requirements

All incoming UCLA students are required to complete a TB risk screening questionnaire and provide documentation of vaccinations before classes begin. Please go to the UCLA Immunization Requirement website for details. You can log in to complete these requirements through the Ashe Patient Portal. New students at higher risk for tuberculosis must provide documentation of either skin or blood testing for TB within 6 months preceding entry to UCLA. Those with a previous positive TB test should get a chest x-ray. The deadline to complete the requirement is October 1, 2024.

Insurance

Students are automatically enrolled in the campus medical insurance plan, UC SHIP(UC Student Health Insurance Plan) for a cost. UC SHIP is assessed as part of registration fees at each term (currently $1, 067.49 each for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters and may increase for the 2024/2025 school year. Spring Quarter enrollment includes summer coverage). Dental coverage is included as part of UC SHIP for undergraduate students.

If you already have health insurance that meets the University’s minimum requirements, you may waive UC SHIP and its associated fees. You must do this online during the fee payment period for each term. During the Fall Quarter fee payment period (July 1 – September 20) you will have the option to waive out of UCSHIP for the entire year. This option will submit the waiver automatically for Winter and Spring quarters.

To waive UC SHIP, go to the Ashe Center Website and choose “Insurance” and the “UC SHIP Waiver Application” page. We recommend you review the UC SHIP Pre-Waiver Worksheet (also found under “Insurance”) before continuing on to the site to UC SHIP.

UC SHIP information is available online at Student Health, under “Insurance.”

All registered students will have access to the Ashe Student Health Center, regardless of which insurance they have.

Mandatory Education Program

As part of UCLA’s commitment to creating and maintaining a healthy and safe environment for all students, all incoming students will complete a mandatory education program that includes the topics of Title IX – sexual assault, sexual harassment, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and bystander intervention. These programs are in accordance to state, federal, and University mandates (see below).

All newly admitted UCLA students are required to receive education and training on topics related to Title IX. This is accomplished by completing an online module related to the issue of Title IX.

Failure to meet this requirements by October 1, 2024 will result in a hold being placed on your records which will prevent you from registering and enrolling in courses.

ONLINE MODULE REQUIREMENT

In the summer you will receive an email from the online vendor with an invitation to complete the online Title IX module.

Before attending your New Student Orientation session remember to:

• Make sure to read through information pertaining to session costs and fees.
• Complete the “Preparing for New Student Orientation” module.You will receive a link to the module with your session reservation confirmation email.
• Submit your BruinCard photo by July 1, 2024. View photo requirements .
• Complete the Math Diagnostic Test by July 1, 2024 if needed.
• Complete the Chemistry Diagnostic Test by July 1, 2024 if needed.
• Take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam if needed.
• Submit all of your official final transcripts and test scores to UCLA Undergraduate Admission by July 1, 2024. Failure to submit these records may result in a hold preventing you from enrolling for Fall Quarter or a withdrawal of your offer of admission to UCLA.
• Get Tech-Ready for your session.You will be sent information on how to access the session schedule 2-3 days before your session. Please bring a device for your session (eg. iPad, laptop, chromebook) for activities including enrollment in the session if you have one. If you do not have access to a device, you can still participate fully in New Student Orientation.

Preparing to Stay Overnight

Linens (sheets, blankets, towels) and pillows are provided for the session.

All meals will be provided:

• Day 1 – continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner
• Day 2 – breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Students are advised to bring the following items:

• toiletries
• change of clothes for two days
• comfortable shoes for walking around campus
• light jacket or sweatshirt for evenings
• spending money for souvenirs (optional)

New Student Checklist

The above items should be completed before your New Student Session; refer to the New Student Checklist to make sure you have completed all other requirements for the university before beginning your Fall Quarter.

*Please be advised that there will be construction work on Wilshire Boulevard this summer on weekends. There may be closures on Wilshire Boulevard between Veteran Avenue and Westwood Boulevard. Please plan accordingly.
