Filling Out the Compendium - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Guide - IGN (2024)

Filling out the Compendium is a short quest found at the Hateno Village Research Lab in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom that you can complete in minutes -- even if actually filling out the entire Compendium is a task that will likely take you the duration of your entire adventure to complete.

To start this quest, you must have unlocked the Camera. Then finish the Hateno Village Research Lab side quest and get your Purah Pad upgraded (Sensor +). Finally, interact with Robbie's Hyrule Compendium, found on a table in the lab. This starts the quest.

Things that can be tracked in the Compendium:

  • Fauna Picture: animal bird, fish, or insect
  • Enemy Picture: various monsters that can be found throughout Hyrule
  • Material Picture: cooking ingredient, such as an apple or a mushroom
  • Weapon Picture: battle-tested weapon, such as a sword, spear, or bow
  • Other Picture: an exciting subject, such as a treasure chest or ore
  • Elite Enemy Picture: a powerful monster that at one time stood in your way

Note that the categories in that actual Compendium differ from the picture categories. You can find them and the number of entries below.

Whenever you take a picture of a creature, ingredient, or item/weapon, it gets registered in the Hyrule Compendium. This will also unlock additional details that you may find helpful. Plus, the item or creature can then be tracked with the Sensor +, too, which is helpful for ingredient farming or finding caves (via Bubbulfrogs).

What do You Need to do to Complete the Compendium Quest?

You actually don't have to fill it. You just have to complete the three prerequisite quests -- Camera Work in the Depths, Hateno Village Research Lab, and Presenting: Sensor +! -- to make Filling Out the Compendium available. Start the quest by interacting with the Hyrule Compendium.

To complete Filling Out the Compendium, access the Compendium again and purchase a picture from any category from Robbie. This teaches you that you can fill gaps by buying a random photo you don't yet have from him for 100 Rupees each.

Note that some of the bosses you fight throughout your quest are also found in the Depths, so don't worry about missing your shot.

Note that there is no reward for completing the Filling out the Compendium side quest -- other than the knowledge that you gain from reading the entries for things you photographed.

How Do You Complete All Compendium Entries and How Many Are There?

There are 509 different entries to complete in the Hyrule Compendium. You can capture all of them in the wild and purchase most of them.

How to get the Sun Pumpkin: You may note that you may not be able to buy a picture for the 243rd entry (in the Materials category). This is the Sun Pumpkin, which is a quest unlock. To get it to appear, complete the five "election" quests in Hateno Village, starting with Team Cece or Team Reede?, then complete Homegrown in Hateno. Once complete, you can acquire and photograph the Sun Pumpkin.

You can also buy them in the General Store in Hateno for 20 Rupees, but only after the Homegrown in Hateno quest is complete.

The required entries for the Compendium are, by category:

  • 92 Creatures
  • 110 Monsters
  • 126 Materials
  • 175 Equipment
  • 6 Treasure

What is the Reward for Completing ALL Compendium Entries?

If you complete all the required pictures in the Compendium, head back to Robbie to talk to him. He will give you Robbie's Fabric for your paraglider, to sport a Purah Pad design with Compendium category icons.
