What is the purpose of a float shoe? ›

They are used to guide the casing to set in the hole and ensure the quality of cementing. They are widely used in the lower section of the well to help decrease strain on the derrick while directing packaging past edges and bog zones in the opening.

A guide shoe is a piece of equipment placed on the bottom of a casing that guides it to total depth. Unlike a float shoe and float collar, a guide shoe does not have any one-way check valves.

Definition of 'float collar'

The float collar prevents drill mud from entering the casing while it is being lowered, allowing the casing to float during its descent and thus decreasing the load on the derrick or mast.

The Casing Floatation Sub assists in reducing drag forces and increases the likelihood of running casing to bottom in long horizontal wells. This is done by creating an air chamber below the Casing Floatation Sub and above the float collar/shoe that helps lift the casing off the low-side of the well.

The float collar include a backpressure valve and serve basically the same function as the float shoe. The float collar is run in a casing assembly, usually several joints above the float shoe. It provide a seat for the cement plugs, to help top plugs shuts off fluid flow and prevents over-displacement of the cement.
