We see the word ‘silhouette’ being thrown around frequently on the internet and in fashion magazines. But, what exactly does it mean?
In simpler terms, a silhouette is the outline of a garment or more specifically, a dress.
While plenty of dress silhouettes exist, we are counting down the five most popular ones today.
Plus, it’s always helpful to have some silhouette knowledge at hand when choosing a one-piece according to your body type.

1. Sheath silhouette
Chances are that at least one of your office-wear dresses is featured in this silhouette. It is form-fitting from top to bottom and hugs the body flatteringly.
TIP: Opt for this silhouette if you have a slim waist and an hourglass body.
2. A-line silhouette
This silhouette is fitted in the bodice and flares slightly in the skirt, making it look like…you guessed it…a capital A!
The best part is that this dress silhouette is suitable for most body types because it’s narrow at the top and widens towards the bottom, thus smoothing out the curves of the wearer’s body.
3. Bell silhouette
Also known as the “ball gown silhouette”, this silhouette is fitted in the bodice till the waist and then flares till the hem to look like a bell-shaped skirt.
We are pretty sure that at least one of your party gowns is featured in this silhouette.
TIP: Opt for this silhouette if you have wide hips and thighs as well as a delicate upper body.
4. Straight column silhouette
Dresses with this silhouette have a rectangular shape as they will have almost always have the same measurement for the bust, waist and hem.
TIP: Opt for this silhouette if you have a thick waist and wide hips.
5. Hourglass silhouette
A fitted waistline and a curvy figure make this silhouette what it is.
TIP: Opt for this silhouette if you have a narrow waist and a pear-shaped body.
The crux of the matter is that there are several silhouettes out there but it’s your choice to wear what your heart desires.
