Weird laws, proposals only found in Pennsylvania (2024)

(WHTM) – Most people know basic laws in Pennsylvania, but what about the laws you may not know about or some that were almost signed into law?

Hiding dirt in your dwelling is illegal

If you decide to be lazy and sweep the dust and dirt under the rug, well, you just broke the law, according to Triple Crown Corporation.

This is a cleaning ordinance in Pennsylvania so if you want to hide that dirt and dust maybe find a better hiding place.

Don’t scare the horses

When driving through certain parts of Pennsylvania, you may encounter horses with a rider or horse-drawn carriage. Well, don’t spook them!

Those horses and riders have all the rights as a motor vehicle and PennDOT has a “Horse and Buggy Driver’s Manuel” found here.

According to the Concord Township Historical Society, a group called the Farmers Anti Automobile Society (FAAS) drafted a law in the early 1900s that stated that vehicles that see a horse approaching should stop, pull over, and cover the vehicle with a blanket or dust cover that blends the vehicle in with the scenery.

The same drafted law states that if the horse is still spooked by your vehicle you must take apart the vehicle and put the parts in the bushes. That proposed

Luckily, none of those laws passed.

Shooting a flare every mile

Yet another FAAS-drafted law that never was signed.

This drafted law suggested that drivers of motor vehicles that are driving on a country road during the night would have to stop the vehicle and shoot a rocket/flare, wait ten minutes for the livestock to clear the road, and then proceed.

After proceeding, the driver should blow the horn and continue shooting rockets/flares every mile.

Sleeping on a refrigerator outside

Tired from a long day working outside and just have nowhere else to sleep but the top of your outdoor fridge, well look somewhere else because that would be breaking a law.

Of course, if you want to grab a blanket and sleep on top of an indoor fridge, Pennsylvania has no problem with that.

Putting a pretzel in a bag

If a cop in Philadelphia sees you with a pretzel in a bag, they most likely won’t put you in handcuffs but they technically could.

According to Need to Know Facts, this law was formed during prohibition due to alcohol also being found in the same bag as a pretzel.

This law is also only in Philadelphia so anywhere else in Pennsylvania you legally can have a pretzel in a bag.

Walking backward and eating peanuts

If you are caught in Ridley Park, Delaware County, eating peanuts and walking backward in front of the Barnstormer’s Auditorium during a performance that is breaking the law.

Singing in the bathtub

According to the Bathroom Singing Prohibition Act that was passed in 1969, it is illegal in Pennsylvania to sing in the bathtub.

If you want to sing but not break the law you can sing in a bedroom, kitchen, outside the bathtub, and many more places.
