Wediquette Wednesday: Should I wear a gray, black or tan suit to my niece’s wedding? (2024)

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. This week, we have a reader question from Facebook. (This Q-and-A was edited from the original exchange for clarity).

Question: I’m attending my niece’s wedding. It’s a full Catholic Mass wedding at 5:30 p.m. Reception to follow. Gray suit or black? What about tan?

Answer: What to wear as a wedding guest can be confusing, even for male guests. Depending on the time of day, season and formality of the nuptials, questions about suit color, fabrics and to don a tie or not all come into play. For an early evening wedding in the spring, either gray or black is acceptable. Gray is slightly more casual and black is slightly more formal. Tan, as well as seersucker and linen are all appropriate for an afternoon, outdoor wedding, but not for a church wedding beginning at 5:30 p.m., with a reception extending into the evening. Once nightfall hits, tan will look out of place. Gray is the overall better option in this instance, as it will carry over better into the evening revelry.
