Wondering about the differences in the most common wedding dress silhouettes? My San Diego bridal boutique and I have filmed a video to explain A-line vs ballgown vs mermaid vs fit and flare. Watch to learn what silhouette you might prefer for your wedding, though I encourage you to be open to trying out a few types. That’s because you never know what you truly love until you try it!
Wedding Dress Silhouettes
Essentially, A-line wedding dresses are fitted until the waist then they follow the shape of an “A” as they flow to the ground. Ballgowns are essentially a poufier version of A-lines. Mermaids are fitted until around the legs then they have a large skirt and train. Fit and flare gowns are fitted until the knees and then flare out just a touch!
Silhouette Examples
First up is a ballgown (left) compared to an A-line (right). You’ll see that the A-line has a slimmer skirt than the ballgown but is still unfitted from waist to floor.

Here is a mermaid (left) and a fit to flare gown (right). Clearly the mermaid differs from its dramatic skirt while the fit to flare is much more subtle and sleek.
