Thomas' relationship to various different characters.

Edward

Thomas and Edward have always been close friends. Edward acting as a mentor to Thomas during his early days on the island. Thomas once believed that the Fat Controller was going to scrap Edward as he wasn't as efficient as he once was. Thomas went to great lengths, even lying to the Fat Controller, to prevent this. Both engines soon discover that Edward isn't going to be scrapped, much to their relief. Thomas and the other engines don't take kindly went Edward is insulted for his age, as they know he is a very hard working and useful engine.

Percy

Thomas and Percy have become close friends, ever since Percy first arrived on the Island. In the Television Series, they are described as being 'best friends', and have a very close relationship. Thomas rarely gets angry with Percy, but has on a few occasions, including the times in which he insulted Percy calling him a 'Green Caterpillar with Red Stripes', to which Percy insulted Thomas back, much to his frustration. And the time in which Thomas accused Percy of deliberately dumping coal on him.

Ashima

Upon first meeting Ashima, Thomas was jealous of her, because she got to go to the Great Railway Show, and he didn't. Thomas however later redeemed himself, and became close friends with Ashima. This is evidenced further by the fact that he risked loosing the shunting competition for her, when a derailed flatbed got stuck on Ashima's line. Thomas has even visited her, during his time on the Indian Railway, showing that he has a strong friendship with her. The Great Race even implies that he might have a slight crush on her.

Rosie

When Rosie first came to the island, she was obsessed over Thomas, to the point she wanted to follow him everywhere he went, much to Thomas' irritation. After Rosie helped rescue Thomas from a potential accident however, the two engines became friends. Thomas appear to respect Rosie, and doesn't tolerate when others mess with her, for example when Hector frightened her in Hector the Horrid! In Rosie is Red it is strongly implied that Thomas has a crush on her, as he has a fantasy involving a kiss with Rosie. Thomas denies such accusations, when accused of liking Rosie by the other engines. Thomas ends up hiding from Rosie the whole day, until their work forces them to be together. Thomas tells Rosie that they are just friends, to which Rosie is glad to hear, However throughout the episode the engines are frequently shown blushing at each other.

Hugo

soon after his arrival on the island, many engines, including Thomas, are astonished by Hugo's fast speed. Stephen tells Thomas that he believes engines like Hugo might eventually replace steam engines, much how he saw steam engines being replaced by Diesel engines as time went on. This led Thomas and the other engines to be rude to Hugo, believing that he was intentionally trying to replace them. Hugo eventually informed Thomas that this was not the case, explaining, that he hadn't even been designed with coupling hooks. Thomas apologizes to Hugo and eventually gives the new engine a proper welcome at tidmouth sheds. It is implied that Thomas and Hugo have since become good friends, as he appeared in Thomas' imagination in I Want to Go Home.

Luke

Upon discovering Luke's situation, of believing that he had inadvertently caused the scrapping of a yellow engine, Thomas went to great lengths to find the identity of the engine, hoping to validate Luke that the engine hadn't been scrapped. Thomas eventually discovered the fact that the engine was actually Victor. Thomas soon explains to Luke that he no longer has to hide in fear, as he has 'talked to Victor'. This statement leads Luke to believe that Thomas has told his secret to the other engines. Luke and the other narrow gauge engines rush away from Thomas in anger, believing that he has betrayed them. Thomas goes to the length of climbing to the top of the quarry to explain to Luke the truth, but in the process derails on the narrow gauge tracks, and is sent dangerously dangling on the cliffside. Even though still not fully understanding the situation, Luke races to Thomas' aid, pulling him back to safety, stating that they are still friends. Victor soon reveals himself as the yellow engine to Luke, who is relieved, as he no longer has to hide in fear. Thomas and Luke have remained good friends ever since.

Diesel 10

Upon needing his help to fix the airport, in Calling All Engines!, Thomas befriends a reluctant Diesel 10, who eventually agrees to helping. Diesel 10 naturally revered back to his ways, and had Thomas trapped in the Dieselworks back shed during Day of the Diesels, when the Diesels overran the Steamworks. Thomas and his friends soon put a stop to the takeover of the Steamworks, and called Sir Topham Hatt down, who put a stop to Diesel 10's behavior for the day, but promised him that he would receive a restored Dieselworks as desired. Diesel 10 remained friendly with Thomas and the other engines towards the end of the special, and seemed grateful for a new Dieselworks. Thomas later had to put a stop to Diesel 10' actions, when he stole Christmas decorations in 'The Missing Christmas Decorations', explaining to him that it wasn't right to steal from others.
