It’s not easy being a referee in the NFL. Every call is scrutinized and some decisions made loom large. The past two Super Bowls, for instance, are great examples of how referees can influence a game.
Two years ago, a 3rd and goal holding call on the Cincinnati Bengals gave the Los Angeles Rams a new set on downs with 1:44 remaining in Super Bowl LVI. Just a few plays later, Matthew Stafford would connect with Cooper Kupp for a game-winning score.
Last year, a holding call against Philadelphia Eagles cornerback James Bradberry on third down kept the Kansas City Chiefs on the field with under two-minutes remaining in the game. Kansas City was able to milk the clock and kick a game-winning field goal with eight seconds remaining. After letting both teams play for the majority of the game, the officials ultimately decided the game.
Will this happen three years in a row? We’ll know the answer to that question in just a few hours. In the meantime, here is everything you need to know about the Super Bowl LVIII officials.

How much are refs paid for officiating the Super Bowl?
Referees may get heavily criticized, but they are paid big money throughout the season and if they make it to the Super Bowl.
According to Money.com, officials make an average of $201,000 per season. Those that call the Super Bowl are in line for an even bigger pay day. Like the players participating in the big game, there is extra money given to the referees.
Money.com estimates that modern Super Bowl bonuses for NFL referees are between $30,000 and $50,000.
Not a bad gig if you can get it.
