Story[]

Spoiler warning: Plot, ending details or any kind of information follow.

After the events of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic releases theChaos Emeraldsand is teleported to Hilltop Heights Zone. There, he catches sight of the nearly completedDeath Eggand speeds off to stop its impending launch. Later on, after duking it out with Robotnik, Sonic heads off into Star Shore Zone. There, Tails is seen looking awkwardly at aMoto bugthat seems to be asleep, and tries to touch it, but it awakes. Just as it is about to attack Tails, Sonic appears, destroying the Badnik and hurrying off. Tails, amazed at the sight, sets out to follow the blue blur. Some time later, a robot appears and begins to attack Tails, who is able to defeat it. After a while, Sonic begins to feel that someone is following him. When he turns around, he sees Tails, who is ecstatic to see him. Sonic tries to run away, but Tails flies up to the platform Sonic is standing on. In an effort to escape, Sonic jumps into the water. Before Tails can follow him, he is captured by a flying capsule. Some time after that, Sonic and Tails meet up once again, and Sonic allows Tails to tag along with him. Just as they are about to confront Robotnik, Tails gets knocked off of the platform, Sonic unable to reach him in time. Tails falls into the clouds nearby, and learns how to use his tails to increase his speed. He then fights the orb robot for the last time, scrapping it. Sonic then faces off against Robotnik, who is fighting him in a body armor. After the first phase, the seventh Chaos Emerald appears, and Sonic transforms intoSuper Sonic, and battles against the doctor in his second phase. Sonic defeats Dr. Robotnik, and powers down. As he falls to the ground, Tails appears flying the Tornado, Sonic's biplane, which he lands safely on. They then land in Emerald Hill Zone, and the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 begin. |}

Gameplay[]

The game plays very similar to the original Sonic The Hedgehog games on the SEGA Genesis. The player, controlling either Sonic or Tails, platforms throughout several levels, destroying enemies and using the physics of the game to traverse environments. Sonic and Tails can both use the Spin Dash. Sonic can make use of theSuper Peel Out, but not in the form of a figure eight. Tails can fly, much like he did in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. There are 3 acts per zone, with the boss of each zone having its own separate act. Special Stages can be accessed at the end of Act 3 for Sonic and Tails (these acts only get you extra lives, not the Chaos Emeralds). Unique to this game is the addition of "Time Points", which determine your ending at the end of the game. If the player fails to complete the game in under two hours, they will receive the bad ending. If they do beat it in two hours or less, they fight a bonus boss (which is unique to the 2012 release) and the player receives the good ending.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Before the Sequel (9)

The SAGE 2012 version of the game has numerous improvements to the game. In addition to a graphical improvement, the game recieved an original soundtrack composed by the team of Falk, KgZ, Andy Tunstall, and Funk Fiction. The soundtrack is widely praised as being one of the best parts of the game, to the point thatJun Senouehas even admitted to liking it. However, the music for the cutscenes and Special Stages from the 2011 version still remain intact. The soundtrack and the game can be downloaded atthe Sonic BTS SAGE 2012 splash page.

Trivia/Known Bugs[]

  • Due to bugs with Adobe Flash, which all the of cutscenes run in, the game can crash on some systems as soon as a cutscene tries to load. This is a problem with theSonic Worldsengine that is essentially unfixable, leaving some players no choice but to play the game with cutscenes off and go toYouTubeto find out what they are missing. Unfortunately, this introduces another bug. By choosing to select the cutscenes off, the game won't allow you to fight against thePerfect Run Final Boss- instead, it takes you straight to the ending screen. If this problem happens to you, here is a link for Clean Flash Installer, or alternatively Adobe Flash 18.
  • In thePerfect Run Final Boss, if the playerhits Dr. Eggmanafterhe begins to explode, the game becomesstuck and unable to finish, forcing the player back a couple levels.
  • Sonic in the original 2011 release will have after images when running at full speed, for whatever reason this was dropped in the 2012 release, however it is still visible in the final game during the cutscene that plays after beating the Rocky Ride Zone Boss, Egg Flight Blaster, and during the first ending credits scene after beating the true final boss.
