Chapter One.
}Havenfield{
As Sophie looked around the hall, she noticed Keefe sitting on the stairs, looking unlike his normal self. He should have been cracking jokes with the rest of the guests and pulling pranks. Shortly after they had arrived at the party at Havenfield, Sophie had gotten so caught up in talking with people she forgot completely about how Keefe needed to talk with her about something. She walked over to him and sat down at his side.
"Are you okay?" She asked, her voice was quiet, and that only made Keefe more nervous. Did she know?
"I'm fine, but I still need to talk to you." He answered, looking around at where they were and added, "Maybe not in here. Calla's tree?" Stairs at a party probably wasn't the best place for this. He grabbed her hand, as he'd done many times, and brought her outside, to Calla's tree, and sat down. She sat beside him and asked, "Sooooo, what's this about?" Wondering why he was acting so strange, did she do something? She was about to ask if it was her- when he grasped her hands and made her face him. He was nervous of course, but said. "Sophie, I wanted to tell you this many times, but it's been hard. I was afraid..." He thought about the relationship she'd had with Fitz. He sighed but looked back at her, gathering his strength for this moment. "Well. I was afraid you'd be freaked out, or mad at me, or something would happen to our friendship..." His voice wavered as he imagined their friendship being destroyed.
"But what I need to tell you is- I want to be more than friends." He said the words at lightning speed, afraid he wouldn't have the courage to say them at all if he slowed to think about it. She went pale, and didn't break eye contact with him. Really? Did he really just say that? She heard from others, especially Edaline, that he maybe had a crush on her. But really? And, if she was being honest, she had thought about it before too, should she...
"Keefe, I-" Just as she was about to speak, she looked at him. And his eyes were watery, with fear that she would reject him. Before she could say anything else, he tangled his hands into her straight blonde hair, and pressed his lips against hers. A tsunami of emotions flooded him, for he could feel all of hers too, being an Empath. When he opened his eyes again, he saw Sophie looking back at him, and said,
"Sfeehumnabladijloo." What in the world.... he thought, it was supposed to say, Sophie, I love you. She snorted, and that's when they heard a sound from the direction of Havenfield.
It was Fitz. He had tears in his eyes, and was trying to choke back a sob as he watched them intensely. He looked devastated, and was. Sophie just kissed his best friend! She was supposed to kiss HIM! Not Keefe! He felt anger boiling up inside, and it mixed with his devastation. If that's how he was gonna play it, then it's ON.
He slowly walked up the Sophie and Keefe, who were staring at him, and turned towards Sophie, he was ready to make a fool of himself for her. He looked her right in the eyes and said,
"Sophie Foster, I love you." She gasped, and at the same time, Keefe glared at Fitz, clearly not happy with him. Fitz took Sophie's hands, and continued staring at her unusual brown eyes, leaning in to kiss her. That's when they heard the Havenfield door open, and then there was Grady. He looked at the situation, and gave Fitz a hard stare, and had a feeling that boy Keefe had something to do with it too. Oh, that Sencen boy..... but he'd have to deal with him another time. Fitz stuttered to say something to Grady, now feeling extremely embarrassed.
"I- uh, this isn't-" Was all he could manage. Grady continued his cold stare, as he Mesmered Fitz into running in circles.
"Do NOT mess with my daughter, Vacker." He turned towards Keefe again, and gave him the same stare. Keefe looked between Grady, Fitz, and Sophie. He held his position, hoping Grady wouldn't make him run off a cliff or something.
"And you, Sencen boy. Did you have a part in this?" His voice was rasped, only making Keefe feel worse about his answer.
"I- I- Uh, I didn't- well," He sighed, he was no better than Fitz at speaking under Grady's pressure apparently. But it didn't matter, that was all he needed to say to let Grady know he did something.
"Well? What did you do." The last part wasn't exactly a question the way he said it, but Keefe still knew to answer.
"Um, I uh, kissed her...." His voice trailed off, and Sophie gave him a sympathetic look, she knew how Grady could be on matters like this. Grady let out an angry gasp, and made Keefe punch himself in the jaw.
"There. Now you did it for me." He looked towards Fitz again, and Fitz looked dizzy enough he was ready to vomit. Running in circles for a few minutes was not easy on the stomach. Grady sighed and let him stop running, but made him jump up and down. Keefe's jaw looked... out of place, to say the least. He touched his jaw lightly, and winced. He knew better than to speak now, his jaw would only get worse and be in more pain. Grady made Fitz do a few flips next before releasing him and letting him vomit in the grass. Sophie looked at everybody among her and sighed.
"Dad, it's not a big deal-" Even though it was. It was a big deal to her, but he friends were getting very beat up and she didn't want to see whatever Grady would do next.
"Yes, Sophie, it is. It was my understanding one kissed you without permission, and the other was about to! And as your father I'm trying to keep you from things like this." Sophie rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, and Edaline, who came from the nearby shed, asked no questions but dragged Sophie up to her room inside.
"I'll finish this later, boys. And I'd advise staying away from here for a while if I were you." Grady turned and went inside, all the guests to the monthly party had left by now and he went to the kitchen to begin cleaning up. Outside, by the tree, Keefe and Fitz looked at each other, then both light leaped to Elwin in the Foxfire hospital ward. Havenfield's yard was now empty, except for animals, and they had an interesting rest of the night ahead of them.
