June 10th, 2024: How I Got Here (2024)

On my childhood dream job:

What does every little girl dream of being when she grows up? That’s right, a management consulting at a technology consulting firm. #womeninstem

In reality, I had a few different dream jobs growing up:

  • First female commissioner of the MLB #womeninsports

  • Detective. I read a lot of Nancy Drew & Trixie Belden books

  • Tinkerbell, who I adamantly held as my favorite Disney “princess” until Tangled came out. (finally, Disney representation for white, blonde girls! 2010 was about time)

  • Teacher, because when I was in kindergarten I thought it’d be so fun and awesome to hang out with my friends all the time. I still want to hang out with my friends all the time! My friends aren’t kindergartners anymore.

  • CEO, destined for the corner office #bossbabe

  • Soccer player. But professional soccer players had to play in travel Concord Fire leagues and I just wanted to hang out with my friends at YMCA and CMLA leagues.

My genuine, long-lasting dream job was a journalist. I had some wonderful journalist role models in pop culture: Kit Kittredge, Andie Anderson, Carrie Bradshaw, Colin Jost, etcetera. As a young reader and #nerd, I loved words and the way an author could spin something out of 26 letters. As I got older, I figured I didn’t have the creative brain to write fiction, so I’d stick with facts.

I loved doing broadcast in high school because I felt like I was doing the Lord’s work because I controlled the state media and got to write/edit every single morning script for three years. That meant MBC gave the Lady War Eagle sports a fair spotlight, the features were more fun & light (see Teo’s Top Ten), and Marist was getting the hard-hitting news (where to spend the best $5 on an evening’s entertainment). Plus my face was in every homeroom on Fridays, so the ego remained satisfied.

I only applied to colleges that had journalism programs + business schools, and SMU fit the bill. I loved all of my classes, way more than my b-school ones, and I learned more in a lot of ways. However, money won over the noble career of journalism. I sometimes wish I had gone a different route, career-wise, but honest jobs don’t pay the bills. I really believe that good journalism is a cornerstone of democracy. So thank your journalist friends - especially those who work in smaller, local stations or newsrooms. Subscribe to your local, national, and independent publications - I love The Atlantic and The 19th!

MEMORIES

Nostalgia is a powerful weapon. At this point, the only reason I haven’t deleted Snapchat is so that I can get my “One year ago today…” notifications. I think we take for granted the ability to remember the things around us: the good, the bad, the beautiful. I say even the bad since we learn from our mistakes. I’d write more on this but I am really tired. Maybe my M of the Week should be Mailing it In.

Braves suck (they don’t). No sports section this week because I am sad about this (I am being a big baby because we got swept by the Nationals) :(

Watching:

  • Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal docuseries on Netflix

  • Hit Man starring Glen Powell on Netflix

Should I watch Bridgerton? I never got on the train and now I have FOMO.

Wearing:

I hate to say it……………………………… Brandy Melville is kinda perfect. Been wearing the hell out of the tees and tanks I got from them in April. Hulu doc on them only made them more popular! Further proving that all press is good press.

Also I got new PJs in the J. Crew sale and theyre so comfy. I am wearing them now!!

Reading:

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt (author of The Secret History which is a longtime fave). Feeling #seen by this book so far since, coincidentally, the first chapter takes place in Amsterdam AND! the exhibit Theo and his mom tour an exhibit from Frans Hals, which was the focus of the exhibit I saw at the Rijksmuseum last weekend! Am I the main character?

Listening:

ITS A SABRINA CARPENTER SUMMER!!! the tiny blonde girl does it again!!

“Heartbreak is one thing, my ego’s another / I beg you, don't embarrass me, motherf*cker” AND “If you don’t wanna cry to my music, don’t make me hate you prolifically” like yes girl! go off!!!! she’s so me!! Def want to be her for Halloween.

Wanting:

A cute running set that Mir & Rachel & I can match in for our half marathon!! Any and all running fit recs are welcome. Do we go classic lulu? Or cool girl OV? So much to consider.

(to the tune of the Glee recap soundbite)

Half marathon training starts tmrrrrrrrrrrrr. I dislike running still. Let’s see how this goes.
