Meghan Markle and Princess Kate suffered a major wedding fallout which involved tears and tense text messages just days before the ceremony.

The duch*ess of Sussex has had a frosty relationship with the Princess of Wales since she was introduced by Prince Harry into the Royal Family, but their rift was further deepened in the run up to Harry and Meghan’s wedding day in May 2018.

At the time, it was alleged the former Suits star had made Kate cry over an exchange involving Princess Charlotte's flower girl dress, and palace officials refused to issue a statement refuting the claims, further fuelling rumours that the women had fallen out.

The true story behind Meghan and Kate's flower girl dress feud

An insider close to Kate and William reportedly told Tatler magazine in 2020 that the argument was over the flower girls wearing tights, as there was concern due to the hot temperatures on the gorgeous May day that Harry and Meghan tied the knot. While Kate felt they should follow royal protocol and wear tights, Meghan refused as the weather was too warm, and the women subsequently had a falling out.

The couple addressed the rift between Meghan and Kate in their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, as the ex-Suits star explained it was in fact her sister-in-law that had started the bitter war of words, and had since apologised. “A few days before the wedding she was upset about something, pertaining to, yes, the issue was correct, about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings,” Meghan revealed.

“It was a really hard week of the wedding, and she was upset about something, but she owned it and she apologised and she brought me flowers and a note apologising, and she did what I would do if I knew that I'd hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it,” she added. Her frustration wasn’t aimed at Kate but at palace officials who refused to dismiss the rumours about the argument. “What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn’t do but that happened to me,” she sadly shared.

Harry weighs in on the flower girl dress drama

Royal fans were stunned when Harry shared an alleged text message conversation between Kate and Meghan in his memoir Spare, which was released last year. In the tell-all book, he explained that Kate was annoyed over the flower girl dresses, as Charlotte’s gown didn’t fit and was “too baggy”. While Harry and Meghan weren’t surprised the dresses didn’t fit, as they were made in France and had been hand-sewn without any of the girls being fitted, he recalled Kate dropped the bombshell that not only did Charlotte’s dress not fit, but the little girl was in tears over it.

“Charlotte's dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried when she tried it on at home,” Kate wrote, as Meghan replied: “Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8am. Here. At KP (Kensington Palace). Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?” Kate then demanded: “No, all the dresses need to be remade.”

Meghan texted back: “I'm not sure what else to say. If the dress doesn't fit then please take Charlotte to see Ajay. He's been waiting all day.” Kate then tersely replied: “Fine.” The Duke added that Kate told Meghan she had even spoken to her own wedding dress designer - Sarah Burton - about the issue, and she had even agreed with Kate. “Meg asked if Kate was aware of what was going on right now. With her father. Kate said she was well aware, but the dresses. And the wedding is in four days!” Harry wrote. “Yes, Kate, I know,” he said Meghan replied.

Harry also claimed Kate had expressed “problems with the way Meg was planning her wedding”, and wanted a party for the pageboys. “It went back and forth,” he recalled. The Duke said he found Meghan “on the floor sobbing” after Kate’s tense text messages, and assured his wife-to-be that his sister-in-law “hadn’t meant any harm”. The Princess of Wales then apologised to Meghan with flowers and a card the following day, although it’s not known if the dress was altered or remade.
