When it comes to wedding costs flowers and décor is one of the biggest, scariest unknowns for brand new brides and grooms-to-be.
While renowned for costing a fortune, your centrepieces don’t have to break the bank if you’re prepared to be sensible. Some couples know from the outset that they want to go all out but if you’d prefer to keep some budget for your honeymoon we have some top tips for you.
- Think candles
Candles are a lot cheaper than flowers and can be even more effective. Make candles your focus by incorporating lanterns, candelabra or a selection of glass cylinder vases at different heights. Chunky pillar candles that make a statement can be hired to lower your bill further. There is nothing more romantic that a room aglow with pretty candlelight.
- Minimise blooms
If you love flowers but not their price tag think outside the box about creative ways to display just a few. Stems of sturdy blooms submerged in large vases of water or rose heads in hollow glass balls suspended from branches make for a gorgeous, contemporary tablescape. Small pots or jars containing mini posies of flowers can be used to enhance a centrepiece and offer a smaller scale floral element. Somewhat surprisingly even an elegant orchid plant often works out better financially than a traditional bouquet.
- Go for green
You can use greenery such as penny gum to add to candle-based décor fairly inexpensively. Consider asking your florist to create a whole arrangement using just various leaves and ferns for a truly striking, unique look. If your heart is set on masses of flowers it will cost less (and probably look better) if you allow your florist to include some green or even to use more greenery than flowers.
- Be realistic
Sadly many of those photos you’ve been pinning and saving for months were most likely taken at styled shoots or at weddings with astronomical budgets! Take advice from your florist on how you can achieve a similar look at a fraction of the cost by making a few compromises. Allow your provider to make suggestions with regards to which blooms to select and avoid being overly specific with your brief. Be prepared to scrap your more outlandish ideas if they are simply cost prohibitive. Remember what the day is about!
- Spend wisely
Don’t splurge too much on the ceremony. Your guests will only be there for around thirty minutes and their focus will be on you in all of your glory. Make your money work harder by spending it on areas where it will make a bigger impact. Make it work double time where you can – for example using favours as one of your décor elements. Be sure to make use of what is available to you free of charge such as linens and furniture provided by your venue free of charge. Going bespoke will add extra to your bill in hiring costs.
