Gingerbread Spice Mix (1)

Unlike pumpkin pie spice, gingerbread spice isn't readily available in most supermarkets. If you are struggling to find it in the store or want to make it at home for a lot less, this recipe is for you!

This Christmas spice mix is a classic for baking cookies, bread, and muffins, but it's also delicious in pancakes, sprinkled in oatmeal, hot chocolate or even coffee! It's our favorite way to add a bit more spice and flavor to desserts like this quick ginger pear crisp.

What Is Gingerbread Spice?

Gingerbread spice is a blend of ginger with equal parts cinnamon and a gentle hint of nutmeg, allspice and cloves. But, like most spice blends, it can vary slightly depending on who’s making it.

Gingerbread has a very distinct flavor that's pleasantly sweet with a mild, peppery kick. It'susually a love it or leave it for most, which is why I prefer homemade blends over store-bought so you can easily tweak the ingredients to your liking.

How To Make Gingerbread Spice Mix

As you can imagine, this gingerbread spice mix couldn't be simpler - measure, mix, and you're ready to go! The best part is you only need 5 spices that you probably already have in your pantry.

Gingerbread Spice Mix (2)
  • Ground ginger
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground nutmeg
  • Ground allspice
  • Ground cloves

Pro-Tip: For a slightly different, more unique flavor try adding cardamom, ground anise, or black pepper.

Storing Homemade Spice Blends

Store any leftover gingerbread spice mix in an empty spice jar or air-tight container. Ground spices are safe to use for up to a year, but tend to lose their freshness quickly and typically don't last past six months. Give it a good whiff before using - if it smells like nothing, toss it.

What's The Difference Between Pumpkin Pie Spice And Gingerbread Spice?

Both actually include most, if not all, of these same ingredients, though in different amounts. Pumpkin pie spice is heavy on cinnamon, while gingerbread spice has a balance of cinnamon, allspice, and ginger.
