Former McDonald’s worker explains the real reason you’re charged for ‘extra’ sauce (2024)

Now here’s somesaucytea.

Fast-food fanatics who love dunking their fries, nuggets and burgers in select dipping condiments from McDonald’s often hate being told, “You’ll have to pay extra for sauce.”

Some Golden Arches addicts even take offense when a cashier is reluctant to freely hand over a few containers of barbecue, honey mustard, ranch or sweet-and-sour sauces to complement their costly orders of greasy goodies.

But an ex-Mickey D’s employee says their unwillingness to dole out the dips isn’t about being rude to Happy Meal heads.

Instead, it’s meant to prevent sauce assault.

“The main reason we charged for extra packets is to prevent abuse,” former McDonald’s grill master Ivan Josiah Lapis, who worked for the grub-on-the-go giant for two years, explained in a popular Quora post.

“It’s fair to assume that two packets of sauce are enough for a six-pack of nuggets, right?” he continued.

“If you need more than that, then what the heck are you doing with the nuggets?”

Lapis, who now works in tech, went on to note that McDonald’s doesn’t explicitly instruct its staffers to withhold the creamy goodness.

“We’re not told not to give out ‘too much sauce,’” said Lapis, “but instead we are told that each specific purchase has a defined sauce packet given for free.”

“For example, getting a four- or six-pack nugget, you are allocated one free sauce packet,” he explained. “However, at our own discretion, we can give an extra free packet.”

And, unsurprisingly, money is at the root of the matter, too.

“For every 20 or so packets we save, we don’t have to order another box of them,” said the snack food pro, noting that limiting how many sauces each customer receives helps better serve all patrons.

“So, we have more on hand longer,” said Lapis, “and less risk of running out.”

As altruistic as the extra fee for sauce may be, McDonald’s burger flippers have taken to social media to gripe over the nasty responses they’ve endured from disgruntled diners who don’t appreciate being up-charged.

“When you work at McDonald’s and get yelled at by customers for charging $0.25 for sauce,” penned a worker in the closed captions of a TikTok post featuring a dancing John Cena.

Unhappy frequenters of the french fry palace have also aired out their grievances over the sauce surcharge online.

“Y’all so I just left McDonald’s and they charged me $1.00 extra [for each sauce] and I got 3 sauces” complained a TikTok critic known virtually as @Zee6807. “So these MFs charged me $3.00 extra. Wtf!! Sauce used to be free.”

McDonald’s has recently found itself at the center of several controversies, including “shrinkflation” allegations — which saw Filet-O-Fish fans accuse the brand of serving up smaller fish patties.

The tasty hut was also exposed for using beef tallow — rendered cow fat — to flavor its world-famous fries.

Gobsmacked junk foodaholics were shocked by the revelation.

“Well I just discovered why the fries hurt my stomach real bad,” wrote a surprised McDonald’s eater on TikTok. “I’m allergic to beef.”
