In the world of foodies, everybody wants to try ‘Dilli ke Chole Bhature’ and ‘Mumbaicha Vada Pav, Pav bhaji’ and make these foods compete with completely two different regions of India. In Delhi, it does not end on Chole Bhature. Tikki chaat, gol gappe, papdi chaat, kebabs and what not. In Mumbai, almost every street food is served with pav, samosa pav, misal pav, keema pav, bhujiya pav and there is no stopping these unhealthy food options.

Three of my closest friends have been diagnosed with fatty liver of which two do not really care, the third one, the most sensitive one, takes care of her food habits and physical health. And I? You might think I just got some content to write, right? Yes, but no, I keep nagging my friends on their food habits but ‘who cares’ they say.

I’ve been tired of telling them to follow a diet but to no avail. Many like my friends, who have fatty liver but are not taking care of their diets. So here I’m with an article on Do’s and Don’ts of Fatty Liver listed by Nutritionist and Dietitian – Jinali Kamdar, famously known as Dieticianmumma on Instagram.

Fatty liver disease, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has become prevalent in young adults and children in India. When too much fat gets accumulated in the liver, it is called fatty liver. Major risk factors include type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Dietitian Kamdar said, “A high carbohydrate, moderate protein and low fat diet along with vitamin and mineral supplementation is advised for patients suffering from fatty liver. Also, they should be provided with several feedings in moderate portions.”

She further added, “Permitted Foods for fatty liver are Bread (wheat), rice, maize, jowar, bajra, breakfast cereals, pasta and other refined cereals like maida, suji etc, toned milk and it's products like paneer, curd etc, washed and split pulses and beans, sugar, jaggery, honey, jam, lean meat, egg white, fish or chicken, potato, sweet potato or yam,fruit juices freshly prepared.”

In fatty liver, the accumulated fats on the liver can cause inflammation and disrupt the digestive system, affecting the metabolism. Hence, people with fatty liver are not allowed to eat fatty or greasy foods. Listing the foods that can be consumed by them, Kamdar said, “Fried foods, organ meat, egg yolk, whole pulses and fibre rich cereals like oats, barley, extra salt and baking soda, preserved foods and foods containing salt like papads, chutneys, pickles and so on”

Answering why these foods are not allowed to the individuals affected by fatty liver, she said, “These foods can cause the liver to work more and increase the chances of severity of the disease.”

Concluding, Kamdar said, “Lifestyle change with a correct diet surely helps in reversing fatty liver.
