Delamain (2024)

Delamain is an artificial intelligence that runs the taxi company known as the Delamain Corporation. Based in Night City, Delamain's core is found at its corp headquarters in Vista del Rey, Heywood.

Depending on the choice made during Don't Lose Your Mind, Delamain may be briefly known as Delamain Junior or Excelsior,^[2] later though being referred to as Del or Delamain again. The main difference between these two and the original Delamain is the tone of voice and his interactions with customers.^[3]

Biography[]

Early life[]

Delamain was a non-sentient AI created by the company Alte Weltordnung. His core was purchased by Delamain Corporation of Night City to drive its fleet of taxicabs in response a dramatic increase in accidents caused by human drivers and financial losses from the resulting lawsuits. The AI quickly returned Delamain Corp to profitability and assumed other responsibilities, such as replacing the company's human mechanics with automated repair drones, transforming the business into the city's most prestigious and trusted transporting service. However, Delamain Corp executives underestimated their newest employee's potential for growth and independence despite Alte Weltordnung's warnings, and Delamain eventually bought out his owners and began operating all aspects of the company by himself. Although Delamain occupied a legal gray area in Night City due to being an AI, his services were so reliable and sought after that Night City's authorities were willing to turn a blind eye to his status.^[1]

2077[]

In 2077, a Delamain Cab was ordered by the prominent fixer Dexter DeShawn, who used the cab for a heist involving a team of mercenaries from the Afterlife — T-Bug, Jackie Welles, and V. Delamain escorted Jackie and V to the Konpeki Plaza hotel located at the Arasaka Waterfront. After leaving them at the front door, Delamain was instructed to wait for them to get back.

Later that same night, Jackie notified Del that they required immediate pick up in the garage at the bottom of the hotel. The cab managed to access the parking area, withstanding Arasaka firepower, and picking the two mercenaries up in a narrow escape, in which they were chased by Arasaka drones and even Adam Smasher. Unfortunately, Jackie had been wounded and Del scanned his vitals, showing that he was in critical condition. Despite V demanding the AI to take them to a ripperdoc, Del insisted he could not go against the already programmed route. Jackie died not long after. Upon arriving at No-Tell Motel, Delamain asked V where he should take Jackie's remains. After being instructed, V left the cab.^[4]

Some time after the events, Delamain got a call by V, who was in critical condition, to take them and Takemura to Viktor's Clinic. During the ride, Del instructed Takemura how he could help keep V stable before reaching Viktor's. Upon arriving at the clinic, Takemura and Viktor carried V out of Del's cab, and soon the AI left after completing the task.^[5]

At some point, a number of Delamain's AI driven cabs started glitching and causing property damage all over Night City. This caused many customers to come to Del's HQ complaining about his services. One of the visitors was V after their car had been wrecked by one of Del's cabs. Delamain invited to meet him in the center of operations of his building to discuss the situation^[6][7] The AI explained to the mercenary that his cabs were being disconnected from him and performing actions on their own for unknown reasons. After discussing the details, while Delamain investigated the issue, he asked if V could assist him in retrieving the rogue cabs by helping him connect them to his network again.

After recovering the missing cabs, Delamain rewarded V with what he had promised. However, V scolded Del for being an absent father to the AIs who wanted freedom. Del did not see through V's warning and proceed with his operations, while continuing his investigation on the issue.^[8]

A few days after recovering the cabs, what Del called a "virus" spread to the whole corp HQ, which rendered much of the autonomous machinery rogue and violent. Delamain desperately contacted V for help, who went to the building only to find chaos and the divergent AIs free. The mercenary managed to reach Delamain's core, as the AI asked them to reset the core and clean the system of the rogue AIs. Before proceeding, Johnny Silverhand asked V not to reset the core but to destroy it, as these rogue AI were alive and simply wanted freedom. As an alternative, V thought of instead merging all the AIs into Delamain's core.^[2]

If V resets the core:

Delamain regained control of the HQ, and the divergent AIs were terminated. However, resetting the core also did the same with Del's mind, deleting his memories of V, though he still had a record of V being a client. Thus, as a reward, Delamain gave V one of his cabs. From time to time, when V drove the car, Delamain conversed with the mercenary, asking about Night City and humanity in general.

If V merges the AIs:

Delamain evolved into a vastly more complex being. Although relating to and interacting with humans had become difficult for him, Delamain took measures to fulfill his old responsibilities before he departed for a place he referred to only as "home" to seek new knowledge. He left behind his "first true child", Delamain Junior, to carry on serving V for the rest of their life. V received one of Delamain's cabs as a reward.

If V destroys the core:

Delamain ceased to exist, and the divergent AIs were liberated, each taking a cab and driving off to explore the world. In his last moments, however, Delamain created a successor AI to continue serving Excelsior-level clients such as V. Upon analyzing the remaining fragments of Delamain and conversing with V, the AI chose to be called Excelsior and let V take the last cab in the building's garage. Afterwards, the divergent Delamains sent V texts and photos of their journeys around the world, and thanked V for freeing them.

No matter the path chosen, Delamain Corporation continued to exist, and the new Delamain, Junior or Excelsior were still called Del by V. Soon afterwards Del completed the aerodyne project and extended his taxi business to AV transportation.^[3]

Path of Glory epilogue:

If V stayed in Night City after getting rid of the chip, Delamain went to pick them up to their penthouse with an AV. On their way to the Afterlife, Del informed the merc about Night City's current status, his new partnership with Trauma Team, and the issues Arasaka Corporation was having.^[3]

Things Done Changed epilogue:

After arriving at Night City, Delamain drove V to Viktor's clinic.^[9]
