How do I know how much range I actually need in an EV? ›

Whether you need an EV with long range depends entirely on you and your driving habits. But, you might want to consider things like: If you have a long daily commute (or frequently drive long distances). Your charging capabilities i.e. can you charge at home or will you solely be charging on the public network?

All-electric range (AER) is the maximum driving range of an electric vehicle using only power from its on-board battery pack to traverse a given driving cycle.

Our rule of thumb is to get enough range to cover your daily commute three times over. If you'll be commuting 30 miles round trip per day in your electric car, you'll want a vehicle with at least 90 miles of range.

Whilst the most efficient speed in an EV is below 10mph, this is not realistic for those on longer journeys, although it highlights why EVs are well suited for city driving. If you're travelling faster try to keep your speed constant. Close windows at 45mph and above as this will reduce drag.

Speed and driving style

Higher speeds require more energy, reducing your EV's range. Try to stick to the speed limit and avoid unnecessary high-speed driving.

The Tesla Model 3 dual motor, long-range is EPA-rated at 322 miles per charge and is one of the most efficient EVs available today. In our 70 mph highway range test, we were able to drive a total of 290 miles (467 km) with an average consumption rating of 4.25 mi/kWh (14.59 kWh/100 km).

I generally believe 250-300 miles is what people want/need. With that said, there are definitely circ*mstances where a 150 mi car would make a lot of sense. The big "problem" is, demand for a 150 mi EV is going to be somewhat limited. You also have to consider 150mi is mixed driving in 70* weather typically.

In optimal temperatures, true range is on average 15% better than the rated range. On extremely cold days, the range can be reduced by as much as 50%. This is predominantly due to the energy required to keep the driver and batteries at a comfortable temperature.
