“Wearing black to a summer wedding is completely acceptable, but just be mindful that darker shades can retain heat,” says Harris. “The last thing you want is to feel hot under the collar. You might also want to explore other material options too. If the ceremony, breakfast, or reception is held outdoors in sunny weather, look for lightweight fabrics such as mohair or cool wool.”
When should you avoid wearing black?
Most of the time, it's totally fine to wear black to a wedding. But there are instances when it's an absolute no-no. Even though you've been saving that stealthy suit for a special occasion, it's important to understand that sometimes it's just not, well, suitable.
“As I mentioned before, it's so important that you pay close attention to the dress code,” says Oliver. “If they're wearing black themselves or if they specifically say that you shouldn't wear black, then you shouldn't wear black. It's as simple as that.”
“Also, if the invitation explicitly mentions a dress code that excludes black, like a white tie affair, you should respect the hosts' wishes and save your black ensemble for another day,” says Stephanie Gibberd, brand ambassador at Dobell. “Additionally, if you know the couple getting married has a cultural or religious background where black is associated with mourning or is considered to be bad luck, choose a different outfit instead.”
What's the best way to wear it?
While loads of guys choose to wear a black suit because it's simple and straightforward, unfortunately, it's not so easy. A standard black suit is definitely passable, but it might look like you're going to a funeral, which, let's be honest, isn't exactly a vibe.
“A tux and white shirt always works, as does a dinner jacket,” says Bukutu. “I've enjoyed seeing textured jackets and blazers at weddings this season. I also think if the wedding is an evening affair, a black jacket on a black shirt is great and is a really strong combination. Where shoes are concerned, dress shoes for a tux is the standard, but I have seen some great trainers worn with suits. Loafers are now very popular too, especially for summer weddings.”
“As well as your suit, it's essential that you get your accessories right,” says Gibberd. “Start with a tie or bow tie. Choose a colour that complements your style; a rich burgundy or a deep navy is universally good. Now, pair it with a pocket square that works well with your tie. Cufflinks and a sleek watch are your best friends, and to round it all off, match your leather belt and shoes for that polished, cohesive finish. It's the small details that make a big difference.”

What do you do if you're still unsure?
Still not sure if you can wear black to a wedding? Reach out to some of the other guests to get their read. If they plan on rocking up in brighter fits, then you might want to look for something similar. But if things are to be tailored, follow suit.
If you don't know any of the other attendees or you just don't want to ask that former classmate who you haven't spoken to in over a decade (we've all been there), it's perfectly fine to reach out to the couple directly. This is the best way to know for sure, and it's better to be safe than sorry.
“Remember, it's a wedding, so whatever you wear you need to make an effort, more so than usual,” says Oliver. “If you're worried about something, reach out to the happy couple and ask questions. Not only will they appreciate that you want to get things right for their big day, you'll have a better time knowing that you've suited and booted appropriately for the occasion.”
