What is a 2-Carat Diamond?

Although people often speak of diamonds in terms of ‘size’, carat specifically refers to the weight of the diamond. One carat is equivalent to 200mg (5 carats in a gram).

The shape and cut quality of a diamond will affect how ‘big’ the diamond appears; for example, elongated diamond shapes such as pear or oval may appear larger than round brilliant diamonds, even when they are the same carat weight. Similarly, a beautifully cut diamond will carry the correct proportions to maximize light return, while a poorly cut diamond will compromise proportions resulting in a less brilliant, smaller looking diamond.

Color

Color is perhaps the most subjective of all the Four C’s and it is where we see our customers show the most flexibility. We carry natural diamonds from D-K in color and would be comfortable recommending any grades within this spectrum for a 2-carat diamond. Diamonds of J and lower may present a warm hue which some customers like, however they can be offset against a yellow or rose gold setting to give a whiter appearance. For a guaranteed, icy white sparkle anywhere from a D-H color is recommended, depending on your budget.

Clarity

For two carat diamonds clarity, we recommend a VS2 or above. This grade usually ensures that the diamond is eye-clean and free of obstructive inclusions. We provide high-res diamond images and 360 videos for all of our natural in-house diamonds so you can thoroughly observe your diamond.

Within the recommended grades that we have outlined, the lower end of your budget for a 2.00ct diamond would be represented by J/K VS2/Si1.(Click here to see available option that part of our A CUT ABOVE® brand of super ideal-cut diamonds). The prices are at the lower end of the price range for a 2.00ct diamond, largely due to lower color. However, make no mistake that these are stunning diamonds. Certified Hearts and Arrows, with optimal light performance, the small trade off with color translates to a huge difference in price. You can read our full guide to K color diamonds here.

G/H VS1 diamonds sit in the middle of the budget spectrum of round brilliant diamonds, yet they are very near the top of the scale in termsof beauty. (Click here to see available options in super ideal cut quality). Even a diamondnovice can observe the high-res image of these diamonds and appreciate their precision and beauty. VS1 clarity is essentially indistinguishable from Flawless to the naked eye, and the G/H color grades sit comfortably in the middle of the ‘near colorless’ grade range.

Representing the top end of the budget are the elite gems in our A CUT ABOVE® Collection Series. These diamonds beckon connoisseurs seeking exceptional rarity and exclusivity, and ultimate diamond beauty.

Differences in gemological quality can affect the price by tens of thousands of dollars. In many cases these differences are not readilyapparent in precision cut diamonds. So to maximize your budget don’t be afraid to consider J or K colors or VS2 or Si1 clarity, so long as cut quality is top of the scale. There is no such thing as a cheap 2 carat diamond in a desirable quality; if you find a 2-carat diamond with a significantly lower price, it is likely there are quality issues.

2 Carat Lab Grown Diamonds

While fine natural diamonds at two carats and above can be very to extremely expensive, the recent availability of high quality laboratory grown diamonds represents a huge opportunity to own a high quality diamond at a very affordable price. Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds with essentially the same chemical, physical, and optical properties of natural diamonds. But instead of having been created over billions of years deep within the Earth, lab grown diamonds are produced in factories over a few days or weeks, making them much more affordable.

A 2 carat lab grown diamond with top color and clarity that has been cut with precision for outstanding optical performance will rival the best natural diamonds in terms of beauty. Whiteflash offers such diamonds in our Precision Lab brand. These represent the very best available in lab grown diamonds. With the significantly lower cost basis, there is no reason to make much compromise on color or clarity, or to all-important cut quality.

FAQs

How much should I expect to pay for a 2 carat diamond? ›

On average, you can expect the cost of a 2 carat diamond to widely vary depending on its shape, cut quality, clarity, color, and whether it's a naturally mined or lab diamond. The varying cost can range from $5,000 to $50,000 or more.

Is a 2 carat diamond a good investment? ›

While prices vary depending on where you purchase your 2 carat diamond, a 2 carat diamond could be worth four times more than a 1 carat diamond. This can make it a good investment, whether you want to keep it forever or trade it in for a larger or different diamond in the future.

Is a 2 carat diamond considered to be big? ›

A 2-carat diamond is considered large compared to the average size of diamonds used for engagement rings. The average diamond size for engagement rings is around 1.0 to 1.5 carats. Therefore, a 2-carat diamond stands out significantly and offers a more pronounced appearance on the finger.

What size diamond is best value for money? ›

Prices also shoot up at certain carat sizes which are known in the jewellery trade as 'magic points'. These are usually carat values like 0.5ct, 1ct, 1.5ct, etc. One budget friendly tip is to 'buy shy'. In other words, look for a diamond with a carat value just under the magic point.

Is a 2 carat diamond flashy? ›

That may sound small, but in diamond terms, 0.4 grams is fairly large. 2-carat diamonds are flashy and valuable.

What is the ideal carat for a diamond? ›

For engagement rings, an ideal weight for a diamond is generally considered to be between 0.30 and 1 carat. This size is popular because it's big enough to grab attention, but not too big to be ostentatious or expensive. However, the ideal weight will also depend on personal preferences and budget.

What color should a 2 carat diamond be? ›

For a brilliant cut, 2.00ct diamond, I would suggest an H-I in color. For step cuts, a G would be more suitable.

Do lab grown diamonds hold their value? ›

As with a natural diamond you can expect your lab grown diamonds to significantly drop in monetary value after purchase. Some estimate that lab grown diamonds can drop to 10% of their original price or lower, while more generous estimators put them nearer to natural diamonds at 30% of the original price.

How much can I sell my 2 carat diamond? ›

2 carat round diamond prices usually range from $5,724 to $47,776 with an average price of $19,741.

What diamond size looks too big? ›

Too big is relative. While a 1.5 carat diamond is larger than the average, what is considered “too big” is personal. If you prefer a more petite diamond of around 0.5 to 1 carat, then yes, it would be too big. However, if you are looking for a larger stone of 2 carats and up, then a 1.5 carat would be too small.

Why does my 2.5 carat diamond look small? ›

If your 2.5-carat diamond looks small, it may be because it has a poor quality cut, the diamond shape hides its carat weight, and/or the ring setting hides its size.

What is the most common engagement ring size? ›

The average size for the US couple is one carat, while most European couples stay around 0.5-0.6 carat. Those in the Mid-Atlantic region will spend nearly $2,000 more than couples in the Midwest. Younger couples tend to choose between one and two carat diamonds, while older couples seem to opt for the higher end.

What diamond shape holds most value? ›

The most sought-after diamond shape, round-cut diamonds, often comes with a higher price tag. The demand for their classic appeal, the complexity of achieving their perfect cut, and the superior brilliance and fire they offer, often result in higher prices.

What is the most purchased diamond size? ›

Market research shows that the average size of an engagement ring center in the U.S. is around that of a 1 carat diamond, and between 0.5-1.00 carat in other countries.

What is the best diamond color and clarity for the money? ›

Because saving money without sacrificing quality is the best.
  • Color: G is the best value in diamond color because it's super white and less expensive than colorless stones.
  • Clarity: VS2 and SI1 are the best values in clarity because they're typically eye clean without the price of being flawless.

Is a 2 carat diamond too much? ›

That being said, and as big and bold as it may be, a 2-carat diamond ring shouldn't feel too large or bulky on your finger, especially if you opt for a diamond cut that is a bit shallower and is placed in a setting that doesn't protrude too high off the band itself.
