There has to be something written in my genetic code that gives me a weakness for bread and butter. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of my grandmother and me sitting together at her kitchen table, devouring slice after slice of freshly baked bread slathered with a healthy smear of sweet butter.

Seriously, what is better than that?

Maybe y’all are like me and have a bread machine that has been relegated to the Island of Misfit Appliances. When we purchased ours a few years ago, I was convinced I was going to be a bread-baking goddess within a matter of weeks. Recipe after flawed recipe, though, robbed me of my determination and convinced me it was impossible to bake homemade bread that tastes as good as what I can buy in the store, and I gave up.

Enter this little recipe, one belonging to a good friend of mine.

It is named simply enough: Buttery Bread Machine Rolls. But there is absolutely nothing nondescript about the flavor of these rolls. They are sky-high little pieces of heaven that are as terrific with a hearty supper as they are standing alone for breakfast. Just typing this post makes me want to fire up my machine to make another batch!

Dusting off my bread machine this week. These sound delish and the picture sure makes my mouth water. I remember the fragrance of bread baking when I was growing up. You never forget those aromas. Someone needs to bottle that aroma.

Hmmmm – I am wondering if this recipe will work without a bread machine. I am always looking for great homemade bread recipes. When I bake bread I always make sure I bake at least 2 because the first one gets eaten right away with butter dripping 🙂

I love our bread machine. We got it as a wedding present and I use it quite a bit. It came with a recipe book and almost everything turns out well. I did however one time make a box mix for the bread machine (where you dump it in and jsut add water) and it didn’t turn out so well. Perhaps you have inspired me to write a blog about our bread machine. either way I will definitely try your rolls.
    Thanks,

Can you use this recipe the whole cycle of the bread machine and make it into a loaf of bread? I know this is an old blog but hopefully you will see this.

Hi, I’m wondering if I let it go through the first rise and second kneading in the bread machine or take it out after the first kneading….

    • Buttery bread machine rolls - Positively Splendid {Crafts, Sewing, Recipes and Home Decor} (30)Amy @ Positively Splendid says

Jessica, are you using a setting specifically for making dough? If so, I would let it run a complete cycle. I believe my dough cycle only has one rise.

I have made rolls just a few times and I always have a hard time rolling or shaping the dough into balls. It just wants to stay in the square shape after I divided the dough up. Can you give any suggestions on how to shape dough into balls? Thanks

FAQs

What temperature do bread machines bake at? ›

(This may seem like a long time to bake, but because of the relatively low temperature of the machine — between 325°F and 350°F — and the large size of bread machine loaves, baking in them usually takes longer than in the home oven.)

What makes homemade bread airy? ›

Carbon dioxide is responsible for all the bubbles that make holes in bread, making it lighter and fluffier. Because gas is created as a result of yeast growth, the more the yeast grows, the more gas in the dough and the more light and airy your bread loaf will be.

Why are breadmakers no longer popular? ›

In a 2017 article for TASTE, Tatiana Bautista argued that a widespread fear of carbs during the late '90s and early '00s led to the bread machine's demise. The gluten-free movement probably didn't help either. But things are changing, and bread machines are becoming relevant once again.

Can I open my bread machine while baking? ›

You should never open the cover of your machine while it is on the bake cycle. Also, too many rich or heavy ingredients may cause the bread to underbake.

What is the secret to a soft and fluffy bread? ›

Add Milk

To make your bread soft and fluffy, another trick used by commercial bakers is replacing water with milk. Milk has fats which make bread softer.

How do I make my bread lighter and fluffier? ›

Adding dry milk powder to your bread dough will help your loaf rise higher. In addition, the loaf will stay soft and hold moisture longer which again means it will last longer. It also helps brown the crust. If you want a lighter fluffier bread loaf just add 2 Tbsp of dry milk to the flour per loaf of your bread.

Why is my homemade bread so dense and heavy? ›

There may be several reasons for a dense, cake like texture in bread. It may indicate the kneading wasn't enough for the gluten to develop properly, or the dough was proved for too short a time or the dough may have been too dry. It is also worth checking the flour you used.

Do you bake bread at 425 or 450? ›

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Bake bread in preheated oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped with a knuckle. Let cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

How long does a bread machine actually bake? ›

Bread Machines bake bread in 2 to 4 hours. Two-hour loaves are done on a rapid cycle. Regular bread bakes in about 3-1/2 to 4 hours. Use the fruit and nut cycle for bread with add-ins like fruits, nuts, cheese and so on.

What temperature does Oster bread machine bake at? ›

Q: What is the oster 5838's baking temp? with the smoke point of olive oil at 280 f, & coconut oil at 350 f, i'm concerned about using them with this. Breadmakers bake at 266°F or 130°C for the French bread setting during the baking stage.

Do you bake bread at 400 or 450? ›

For “lean” breads, which contain only the basic four ingredients, I bake them at 450 degrees F. Baguettes and rolls bake for about 20 – 25 minutes, while most other loaves bake for 35 to 45 minutes. An instant read thermometer is a big help in telling when a loaf is done.
