BJ's Wholesale Club is opening an 88,000-square-foot store on Staten Island.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Shoppers who like to buy in bulk will soon have a new option for loading up on food and household products when BJ's Wholesale Club opens a nearly 88,000-square-foot store in Mariners Harbor.
"BJ's is opening a club on Staten Island to provide area residents with a convenient location that satisfies all their shopping needs," said Maria Fruci, a spokeswoman for BJ's Wholesale Club.
"The nearly 88,000-square-foot club will offer significant savings on high-quality, brand-name food and general merchandise," she added.
While Ms. Fruci said BJ's Wholesale Club will be constructed near the intersection of Forest and South avenues, the exact location of the new wholesale supermarket is unclear. The developer, the Englewood, N.J.-based Real Estate Equity Company, wasn't immediately available for comment.
The developer is currently awaiting necessary approvals to begin construction, said Ms. Fruci.
The closest BJ's Club to Staten Island is in Linden, N.J. BJ's main Island-based competition is Costco-Price Club warehouse, which opened on Richmond Avenue in New Springville in 1995.
BJ's Club boasts of providing its members with brand-name food and merchandise at prices that are "significantly lower" than supermarkets, super centers, department stores, drug stores and specialty retail stores.
BJ's Club says it carries more than 7,000 items, including supermarket-sized staples, USDA Choice meats and stock-up items, as well as all-natural and organic products. The store accepts all manufacturers' coupons.
Headquartered in Westborough, Mass., BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. operates 206 clubs nationwide, eight of which are in New York City.
