Beauty in Threes — Sartorial Host (1)

The ‘rule of threes’ which is commonly used in design also translates to floral arranging. This guideline says that things arranged in odd numbers are often more appealing, memorable, and effective than even-numbered groupings. In this case, I’m using three varieties of flowers to accomplish this beauty in threes. Even though the number of stems are even for each of the floral elements, arranging them at different heights and including three unique, textural flowers proves this rule effective. This beautiful blend of roses, allium, and scabiosa was a sweet accent to a friend’s engagement party this weekend.

FLORALS + SUPPLIES

  • Ceramic vessel (4-5” opening)

  • 1/4” clear floral tape

  • Floral snips

  • 8 stems of quicksand cream roses

  • 2 stems of allium ‘ambassador’ purple

  • 6 stems of sweet scabiosa ‘black knight’

  • 2 stems of scabiosa pods

  • 3 stems of podocarpus greens

STEPS

  1. Use the clear floral tape to create a grid of 1” squares across the opening of the vessel.

  2. Fill the vessel with enough water so that all stems placed within the arrangement will be submerged.

  3. Start with the stems of podocarpus greens to create a greenery base. Varying the heights and placing stems closer and further out will create dimension.

  4. Prepare the quicksand cream roses by removing the outer guard petals and flipping open 2-3 layers of petals to create a more robust and full bloom.

  5. Arrange the quicksand cream roses with a few blooms near the opening of the vessel to hide the floral tape. Place a few of the roses further away so that it reaches away from the vase, giving it a more sculptural aesthetic.

  6. Place the two allium ‘ambassador’ blooms at two different heights. Rotate the arrangement as you are placing the allium to ensure a bit of purple is visible from all angles.

  7. Blend in the scabiosa ‘black knight’ so that the blooms are feature flowers. The curvy nature of these flowers give an interesting shape to the arrangement.

  8. Place the two stems of scabiosa pods at varying heights going in the opposite direction of the quicksand cream roses that are reaching away from the vessel.

  9. Top off the vessel with water and a spritz to the arrangement for a fresh and dewy finish.
