What food ingredients are bioengineered? ›

Yes, bioengineered foods are already on the market. Varieties of a few fresh fruit and vegetable crops, such apples and papaya, as well as certain grains and seeds, such as soy and canola, are bioengineered.

What is bioengineered food? The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard defines bioengineered foods as “those that contain detectable genetic material that has been modified through certain lab techniques and cannot be created through conventional breeding or found in nature.”

According to the National Academy of Sciences and the FDA, bioengineered foods are safe to eat and pose no risk to your health. The NBFDL and USDA's regulations require all foods and ingredients that have modified DNA to make a disclosure using one of four methods of the food manufacturer's choice.

Bioengineered Foods are Potentially Unhealthy.

Bioengineering is the process of changing an organism's DNA. This often results in foods that have been changed in an unnatural way and are not good for our health. These bioengineered food products can introduce novel organisms into our bodies that can cause harm.

If a food item isn't organic or doesn't have a Non-GMO Project seal, avoid products that come from the most common GMO crops. This includes corn, soy, canola, papaya, zucchini and yellow summer squash, sugar beets and cottonseed.

Some of the potential concerns around GMO consumption include: Allergies: Because GMO foods contain foreign genes, some people worry that they harbor genes from foods that may prompt an allergic reaction.

Very few potatoes are GM. I only know of a few russet potatoes that are. Russet potatoes are the typical brown-skinned spuds, the most common, and generally less expensive. But most russets at the grocery store aren't going to be GM.
