My freezer is full of ready meals…there, I said it!

Sometimes when you finish work, the prospect of staring gloomily into that bare fridge trying to conjure up a dish when you only have one red pepper, some vegan mayonnaise and raspberry jam, is so depressing that you really just need to find something convenient to stick in the oven (or microwave).

Hey, don’t judge me just yet.

I’m talking properly cooked, healthy vegan meals; flash-frozen to seal in both nutrition and taste!

There are a few companies offering these delicious alternatives to home-cooked food but allplants are quite possibly my favourite vegan ready meals in the UK. Even my mum has started using them!

You’ll have to read my allplants review to find out why.

4.5/5

Summary

They’re packed full of plant-based protein, low in sugar and contain 2 of your 5 a day! What more could you ask for?

Oh, and they’re incredibly delicious, affordable (yes, really) and delivered right to your door in sustainable packaging.

They have a huge variety of plant-based food which cater for your needs from breakfast through to post-dinner dessert.

Whilst allplants offer a remarkable variety of options, it’s worth mentioning that, since training to gain muscle, I have found the portion sizes to be a little small. Having said that, they do offer add-on sides to satisfy even the biggest appetites, or you could order a meal for two!

Pros

  • Dishes for every meal of the day
  • Developed by a nutritionist
  • 100+ meal options
  • Fully vegan company
  • Sustainable upcycled packaging

Cons

  • Some may find the portions a little small
  • You can't return your glass jars, yet!

What is allplants?

Allplants is a fully plant-based meal delivery service. They are one of the original companies supplying fully vegan ready meals and probably one of the biggest. Because of this, they have an extensive range of dishes and meal types, catering for you from breakfast to post-dinner munchies.

Allplants FAQ

Before we get on to our own thoughts and verdict, let’s go over some of your burning questions about allplants and how their vegan meal delivery service actually works.

Yes indeed! allplants skilfully showcase the versatility of plant-based ingredients by transforming them into delicious, nutritious and 100% vegan meals.

Not vegan? No worries, these meals were designed to appeal to everyone! So whether you’re a vegan or simply looking for a healthier and more sustainable way to enjoy your meals, allplants offers a fantastic range of options that cater to your tastes and dietary preferences.

Yes, all of the allplants meals are delivered frozen. They are frozen straight after cooking and are preserved this way to enable longer storage whilst also keeping them as fresh and nutritious as possible, preservative free!

The dry ice boxes that are used to keep the food frozen during delivery can be separated (once safe to touch) into cardboard and plastic bag recycling.

Yes, allplants is a subscription service. It is very flexible, so you can set up a subscription for every 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6 weeks and easily change the dishes, skip weeks or cancel if you need a break. This is all done through your allplants account which is set up on their website.

If you’re like my vegan mum and you don’t have a microwave, have no fear: you have options!

Some of the dishes can be both microwaved or cooked in the oven, but there are some dishes where it is only possible to cook one way or the other; you will find this clearly marked under the cooking instructions for each dish on their website.

If you put your allplants meals in the freezer as advised you can keep them there for 6 months, but they’re so tasty and convenient we reckon you’ll eat them sooner than that! If you put any of the ready meals in the fridge then you’ll need to eat them within 24 hours.

They deliver to the whole of Great Britain except Northern Ireland and Eire (Republic of Ireland) and a few areas within the following (due to couriers not being able to access them): Aberdeen, Argyll, Arran, Dundee, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Northern Highlands, Orkney Shetland and Jersey.

Our thoughts on the allplants range

You can have all your meals of the day catered for by allplants. And you can rest assured that they are all nutritionally balanced, filling and tasty!

Here is an overview of some of the plant-based dishes that we have reviewed, so you know what to expect from allplants:

Breakfast

We really enjoyed allplants’ range of plant-based breakfasts. They come delivered in a glass jar, which you can easily clean up and store in your kitchen for future use. Perfect for taking snacks to work, or for making your own little vegan puddings.

They have 6 different plant-based breakfast options at the time of writing this and whilst they all share a similar base of oats and/or chia seeds, the flavours are all very different which will bring some variation to your morning breakfasts.

Our fave breakfast = PB+J Oat Pot

Lunch

Do you work from home? Or, do you have a microwave at work? Then you’ll love allplants’ lunchtime vegan meals. They can all be heated and up and enjoyed with time left to grab yourself a coffee before you head back to your desk. Oh, and they are full of nutritious ingredients which will fuel you through to dinner.

We found their lunch options to be really satisfying, but also full of the good stuff. So you’ll be filling up on grains, veg and proteins like tofu. Perfect for getting you through the afternoon!

Our fave lunch = Miso + Tamari Tofu Bowl
Allplants Review: Is This The Best Vegan Meal Delivery? | Vegan Sisters (2)

The miso and tamari tofu bowl really did it for us! Such a good mix of nutritionally-balanced ingredients and the flavour of the edamame and lime smash was exquisite. Who would have thought that mushy edamame could taste so good?

Dinner

Arguably the best meal of the day, so these dishes had to be good! Thankfully, allplants deliver with a wide range of vegan dinner options spanning different cuisines and utilising many different ingredients.

You can choose your plant-based dinner from a range of options including at least 13 Buddha bowls, 20 pasta and risotto dishes, 10 curries, 10 stews, 6 noodles, and 3 pies and tarts, alongside a range of sides if you are feeling that little bit extra.

The best bit: allplants offer an assortment of protein sources in their plant-based dinners, whether you have a preference for wholefood-based meals, primarily vegetables or delicious chicken alternatives and other vegan meat substitutes. So you can select the style of vegan dish you prefer and still enjoy variety OR you can mix it up!

We found their dinners to be exciting. I often found myself dreaming about the idea of them throughout the day. It was great to be eating a vegan meat alternative one night and then a mushroom-based dish the next. Some dishes were spicy and others not at all, and they advertise this clearly. Although, we’d argue for there being more very spicy vegan dishes for us chilli lovers, please!

Our fave dinner = Creamy Rigatoni with Plant Based 'Nduja

Dessert

Save yourself the faff of baking a whole vegan cheesecake (and then guiltily eating the whole thing by yourself within a few days) by adding some desserts to your allplants vegan meal delivery.

Like the breakfasts, these come in glass jars and are perfectly portioned out so you can enjoy your pud and get back to that diet the next day.

As big pudding fans, we found these to be perfect for that post-dinner sweet fix without them being too bountiful.

Our fave dessert = we can't decide!
Allplants Review: Is This The Best Vegan Meal Delivery? | Vegan Sisters (5)

It’s a toss-up between the Salted Caramel Cheesecake and the Sticky Banoffee Pudding. Please don’t make us choose!

Decent portion sizes

Portion sizes are decent, with the majority of one-person meals weighing between 340-490g and deliveringbetween 300-600 calories.

Whilst we love that they offer a range of meals for differing nutritional needs, we do wish that they could offer slightly bigger portion sizes for those aiming at more than 1500 calories per day (Alice is training as a vegan weightlifter). Then again, they do a fantastic range of side dishes!

Is allplants healthy? My thoughts on 'ultra-processed'

Allplants Review: Is This The Best Vegan Meal Delivery? | Vegan Sisters (6)

Definitions of ultra-processed foods vary but NOVA is possibly the most widely used classification system. According to the NOVA system, food that has added sugar or undergone multiple processes such as extraction is considered ultra-processed. Whilst there are some problems with this classification system (you can read more about them here), it can be used as a starting point to determine whether or not your food is ‘ultra-processed’.

Anyway, according to NOVA, the majority of allplants meals fall into the unprocessed/minimally processed category.

Unlike many ready meals you might find in the supermarket, allplants recipes are made using fresh ingredients, including lots of healthy whole foods, fruit and veg. In fact, every meal contains 2 of your 5 a day.

The only processing that has been done in the preparation of these fresh ingredients is the removal of unwanted parts, such as stalks and pips.

Moreover, all the dishes are cooked in small batches and flash-frozen immediately, which means there are zero preservatives involved and the nutrition is locked in. What’s more, every allplants meal is considered low in sugar.

A few of their dishes contain plant-based meat products, such as their Loaded ‘Bacon’ Mac and ‘Cheese’, but I personally think these are unfairly lumped into the ultra-processed category. Yes, they have undergone a process, just like pasta and cereal, but they’re high in protein and often come with additional health benefits compared to animal-derived meat.

Whatever your own thoughts on this matter, there’s plenty of choice on the allplants website and you can opt for one of their many dishes made using only fresh ingredients if you wish to avoid meat alternatives.

What I really love about allplants

One thing I really love about allplants, over all other ready meal services, is the diversity. They have an absolutely ginormous range. You can even choose bundles to suit your dietary preferences – I LOVE the Gut Health Booster Bundle!

Moreover, they regularly team up with chefs as part of their celebrity chef residency programme, which generates limited-edition meals inspired by the chef’s wanderlust and roots.

Just check out some of Rachel Ama’s limited edition meals:

Considering how many dishes they have on their menu, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Rachel Ama’s meals were so unique! There were new ingredients and flavours in there, plus some pretty vibrant colours.

How much does allplants cost?

This really depends on what plant-based meals you are buying and for how many people.

Most of their main meals start around £5.95 for one portion and £9.75 for two people (saving you 18%). A lot cheaper than those takeaways we’ve been ordering… 😉 Their single portion desserts are about £3.50 and their breakfasts are £4.25.

Considering the fact that all of my recent takeaways have cost me more than twenty quid to feed just one person, I’d say that allplants is one of the cheapest yet healthiest ways to feed yourself when you need convenience.

You can even save yourself a bit of money by purchasing one of their bundles here.

The Vegan Sisters' Verdict

As big foodies who love to try out new dishes, ingredients, and cuisines, we have found allplants to be a great way to keep ourselves well fed but also well nourished.

You can tell that their meals have been properly thought out and their nutrients have been well calculated so you know exactly what you are consuming. They put no nasties inside their dishes and everything is flash frozen straight after cooking, which is noticeable when you try their food; it all tastes fresh and homemade, although it may not necessarily look it after it comes out of the microwave.

We have been really impressed by the variety of food and are excited to try all the other allplants plant-based meals. The meals that we did get to try were all so different and tasty. It was great to see them working alongside other vegan brands, like This Isn’t Bacon, and celebrity chefs, like Rachel Ama, to bring new and exciting dishes to their menu.

What especially took us by surprise were their breakfasts. As a big fan of chia puddings, these were right up our street. It is an easy and tasty way of getting your vegan omega-3 dose for the day! The PB+J flavour was a winning combination that we could devour every breakfast time.

We have gone from ready meal sceptics to new customers thanks to allplants and their awesome vegan meal delivery service. And it is made all the better knowing that their packaging is upcycled and recyclable. We just hope that a plastic film alternative is discovered soon so these can be made fully plastic-free!

More of this and bigger portions please allplants 😋
